Hattiesburg, Mississippi is a small town in the state of Mississippi. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The name "Hattiesburg" is derived from the Choctaw word Hatti meaning "a place to encamp." The first settlement in what is now Hattiesburg was founded by a group of Cherokee Indians in 1786. They named their new community after their chief, Atticus Finch, who had been killed in an Indian battle near Mobile, Alabama. For many years, Hattiesburg was one of the most important cotton plantations in Mississippi and produced some of the finest cottonseed production on the East Coast. In 1892, however, it became one of the most troubling slaveholding counties in America when it passed a law requiring all slaves to be bought and sold within its borders. After Reconstruction ended with Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, many African Americans started moving back into Hattiesburg as part of a effort to rebuild their lives following years of discrimination and poverty. Hattiesburg is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 15,898 at the 2010 census. The Hattiesburg and Holmes counties combined had a population of 31,482 in 2000. The first white person to settle in the area now known as Hattiesburg was Andrew Johnson in 1814. He founded a trading post on the Yazoo River and named it for his wife, Hasty Jane. A few years later he moved the post to what is now downtown Hattiesburg because of its strategic location between two major rivers and because of its easy access to wagon traffic from Mobile and Jackson. In 1827, Andrew's brother-in-law Jno. Bogue set up shop near present day Laurel Hill Shopping Center on US 71 south of downtown Hattiesburg. Bogue's store became one of the most important commercial establishments in the town for many years until it closed its doors in 1984 due to economic factors outside of its control. In 1829 James Fenton organized a Methodist chapel within the University Settlement which served as an early model for similar chapels that would be established throughout eastern Mississippi over ensuing decades. Reverend Fenton believed that education could not only provide social stability but also improve economic opportunities for all citizens by creating cultural exchange between people from different parts of America and Europe through religious worshiping classes conducted within educational institutions such as academies and colleges; this type of program eventually led to missionary activity among Methodists throughout southern states during the 19th century (Fenton 1889). In 1830 John Pemberton established himself as a general mercantile agent with offices at both Marshall Street east of Main Street (now Meridian Avenue) and west across Polk Boulevard from what is now Capitol Square (now National Civil Rights Museum). By 1840 Pemberton had developed into one of largest landowning interests in central Mississippi with plantations extending along both banks of the river below Pearl streets northward to Asbury Park (Moses 1974: 9-10). Hattiesburg was founded in 1839 by Patrick McNaught as a small community on the banks of the Choctawhatchie River. The town quickly grew and became a center for cotton production and commerce. In 1861, Hattiesburg was renamed for General Robert E. Lee after he helped to drive Confederate forces from Mississippi during the American Civil War. The city's fortunes declined after the war but steadily recovered in the early 20th century, reaching its peak in 1920 when it had a population of over 100,000. However, economic decline and social unrest led to widespread destruction and loss of life during the 1930s and 1940s, which caused Hattiesburg's population to dwindle to around 10,000 by 1950. Since then, gentrification has begun to take hold in the city, resulting in increased housing prices and increasing traffic congestion.
