Hattiesburg, Mississippi is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 139,412 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Jackson County and the third-most populous city in Mississippi. It lies on the Yazoo River north of Jackson and east of Meridianville. The first settlements in what is now Hattiesburg were made by Scotch-Irish immigrants who arrived from Ireland during the early 18th century. They built log cabins along the river's banks and conducted cattle drives to market. The Scots-Irish were followed by Germans who settled around 1800; they began buying land from Native Americans until 1823 when they ceded it to Spain in a treaty known as the Treaty of New Orleans. Spanish settlers named their new town San Carlos de Moselle after Saint Carolyne of Rome (c 1469–1534). In 1825, General Andrew Jackson came through this area on his way to become President of the United States and decided to make this area his headquarters for operations against Indian tribes living near Mobile Bayou. He ordered Major James Hogg to build him a Milltown center which became known as Jacksonville because it was located whereJacksonville now stands. Hogg completed his mill before moving on to other tasks around that time but left some detailed plans behind which are still used today by engineers working on water projects throughout Alabama and Mississippi
