In 1938, The Daily Mississippian reported that "Gulfport is noted as the leading center for coffee processing and shipping." The early years of Gulfport's coffee history were marked by experimentation with different methods and breeds of beans. In 1944, a group of Frenchmen who had come to Mississippi to study coffee started a small business called Jardin des Fleurs which processed and shipped beans from Louisiana. Jardin des Fleurs became one of the most important Coffee companies in America during World War II. During World War II, Gulfport also played an important role in helping create American military intelligence networks by providing storage and transportation for beans and other materials used in intelligence gathering. After the war, many local businesses closed down as consumers switched to cheaper foreign-made products. However, some longtime residents of Gulfport continued to make their living manufacturing goods such as textiles or plastics using local resources until about 2000.
Gulfport is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,586 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first humans to live in Gulfport came from Africa about 10,000 years ago and are thought to have been Homo erectus. There are several theories as to where they came from: one theory suggests they may have come from Africa because of the warm climate and many trees that grew there. Another theory suggests they may have come from India because of their trading skills and similarities in culture with other groups there. Eventually, these people started growing crops and raising livestock which led to them founding what is now Gulfport about 9500 BC. The first ship arrived in Gulfport on July 3rd 1797 by Capt John Davenport (or Davenport Jr). He was aboard the "Dolphin" and his cargo consisted of goods for shipment to the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti). In 1825, Captain John Fenton made an unsuccessful attempt to establish a whaling station at Point Pleasant Bayou near present day Gulfport; he left instructions for his men not to set fire to any whales or vessels while visiting or anchoring thereabouts due to fears that this would leadto American control over the bayou’s resources. Captain Fenton also ordered his men not leave their ships without first firing warning shots into the air if any whales were sighted ashore.(1) In 1831, Henry Hogg established a mill here known as Hogg's Mill which began producing flour for local markets soon after its construction. By 1835 it had become one of the most important mills in Mississippi Territory due its importance in supplying food for troops during both Andrew Johnson's Presidential campaigns.(2) In 1840 Alabama became a state following passage of a state constitutional amendment granting voting rights based on property qualifications instead of color.(3) As part of this process Alabama annexed much of eastern Marshall County including Gulfport(4) thus forming what is today Marshall County with its current boundaries.. After Reconstruction era ended in 1865 most white residents moved out while African Americans remained behind until 1965 when they were removed completely by orderof Governor George Wallace who wanted all black citizens moved out before he took office
