Gulfport is a city in Bay County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 15,811 as of the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Bay County and is home to the Gulfport–Biloxi metropolitan area. The first settlement in Gulfport was on the banks of the Yazoo River near what is now Permian Basin oil fields. In 1819, John Jacob Astor founded a trading post at present-day Port Arthur on an island in the Yazoo River. He named it Astoria after his father-in-law, James Ketchum (1785–1851). By 1830, over 1,000 people lived in Galveston Township west of town and 400 more lived around Fort Worth Landing on Big Black Creek east of town. In 1831, Isaac Asbury founded a cotton plantation at Pascagoula on land that he had purchased from Andrew Jackson for $3 million dollars. Asbury renamed it Asbury Plantation after his brother Nathaniel's death in 1800 ($4 million today). The first post office opened in Gulfport on July 3, 1840; it was called "Asbury". A second post office opened on May 24th of that year: "Pascagoula". By 1870 most residents were African Americans with few white citizens remaining until after World War II when all whites left except for a few families who moved into new neighborhoods outside of town while their old homes remain standing within downtown GulfportToday most people living within downtown Gulfport are black or Hispanic
Gulfport was founded in 1867 by Captain John Chilton and his family. The first store was built on the corner of Bayou Teche and Gulfport Boulevard. In 1888, the town had a population of 350 people. In 1911, it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1925, it had a population of 5,000 people. By 1940, it had a population of 10,000 people. It was annexed to Jackson in 1948.
