At this point in time it was home to over 20 thousand employees across three campuses: research & development center; manufacturing center; human resources office; finance center; and administrative offices. During the late 1990s through early 2000s there were significant efforts made to change or redevelop downtown Gulfport into an urban core focused on retail shopping malls/centers/úniversities/casinos etc., however these proposals mostly failed because they did not include enough affordable housing or transportation options within walking distance from central business districts such as University Avenue or State Street Mall outside of downtown Gulfport proper
