Gulfport was founded in 1824 as a trading post by General Andrew Jackson and his force during the Indian Removal War. The first store was built in 1825 and the first school in 1827. The town served as a military post from 1827 to 1840 and then as a commercial center from 1840 to 1865. In 1865 it became an important railroad junction and manufacturing center before becoming an agricultural community. Today, Gulfport is an important cultural and commercial center with major industry including shipbuilding, oil production, plastics manufacture, aluminum production, textiles and sporting goods manufacturing. The history of Gulfport began with General Andrew Jackson’s forces during the Indian Removal War on April 14th of that year when they captured Fort Mims after defeating Native Americans near what would later be known as Gulfport (now called Pearl River). On July 5th of that year General Jackson established himself at this new fort along with his brigade of US Volunteer Infantry led by Colonel James Shields who later became Mayor of Jacksonville Beach Florida in that era On October 3rd of 1824 the first store opened up at Gulfport which functioned as a mercantile depot supplying local farmers with foodstuffs such as flour, cornmeal, butter and milk while also selling supplies for troops fighting in the Mexican-American War In December 1830 Commodore George Morrison signed a treaty ceding Mobile Bay to Spain As hostilities wound down general Jackson ordered all flags flown at half mast until peace had been restored During Reconstruction following Reconstruction periods were set up throughout America aimed at restoring order these were known as “White Nights” due to Confederate activity throughout much of America In early 1870 John Sibley started operating what would become known today as Sibley & Wessner hardware store located on present day State Street between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue North which became one of largest Hardware stores east of Memphis Tennessee In late 1870-early71 John Sibley started operations again but this time using his old business name J&W Hardware Store now known simply as JSwarehouse open on First Ave between Fourth Street South and Fifth Street North inside what is currently called Sears Tower across from FedExField within walking distance or just minutes away car rental companies , banks , restaurants ect ect etc By late summer 1870 there were over 200 businesses operating out door combined employing over 10% Of entire city workforce By early winter 1870 most businesses closed however some reopened due to lack thereof available labor New Orleans market opened up so many people moving here did not have reason to leave their homes
