The Gulfport, Mississippi Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment has a rich history of deploying gifts to the military and its citizens. Gulfport is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Gulfport is located on Mobile Bay and forms the eastern border of Tensaw County. The town was founded by General John Chilton in 1824 as a trading post on the Mobile River between present day Gulfport and Iuka. By 1830, it had become one of the most important commercial centers in southeastern Mississippi due to its location on river trade routes connecting New Orleans with Mobile and points east. In 1832, Chilton donated land for a new city which he named after himself – Gulfport. The city grew rapidly during the antebellum period and by 1840 had reached its peak population of 10,000 people; however, it declined during the 1850s as cotton production increased in nearby states such as Alabama and Tennessee. Due to its strategic location at the mouth of Mobile Bay on Mobile River, Gulfport became an important military base during both World War II (1939–1945) and Korea (1950–1953). The harbor served as a staging ground for naval operations against Japanese forces during World War II while also playing host to various military installations including US Naval Air Station Pensacola (now Eglin Air Force Base), USS Forrestal (CVN-71), USS Wasp (CVN-72), US Naval Construction Battalion No. 543 and US Army's 9th Infantry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team participated in Operation Neptune's Spear from November 25–December 3 1945 when Korean forces attacked South Korean ports along with artillery fire from American warships operating off Joint Task Force 135 known then as "Operation Red Thunder". Gulfport is a city in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 26,776 at the 2010 census. Gulfport has been the county seat of Hancock County since 1868. The city was founded on the site of an ancient Indian village and was named for its port on the Gulf of Mexico. The first European settlers in Hancock County were Frenchmen who arrived in 1799. They built a fort at what is now known as Point Lookout and trading posts with the native nations based their economies on salt trade with the Indians. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's Expedition against Mobile Bay destroyed Spanish Fort Moselle and began open warfare between American colonists and natives throughout Southeast Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi Territory (the present-day Alabama), Louisiana Territory (present-day Louisiana), Texas Territory (present-day Texas) and New Orleans City limits. Commodore John Dupleix's squadron under Rear Admiral James Ketchum attacked Spanish Fort San Felipe de Potosi on April 20th off Pointe Coupée just west of present day Gulfport Harbor while supplies were being unloaded from ship "Hernando" to be taken to Mobile Bay; during this action they killed or captured more than 150 Spaniards including three Governors of Spanish Cuba On October 4th 1800 US Naval Officer William Watts captured two smallpox infected buffaloes at point Comfort near present day Meridian This event led to military quarantine being put into effect across much of Southwest America effective November 1st 1800 by order of President George Washington preventing further spread of smallpox among men living close to infected animals
