The Gulfport Air Force Base is home to the 5th Bomb Wing, which provides air support for Operation Iraqi Freedom. The wing was activated on 1 November 1951 and saw action in the Vietnam War. It has since been reassigned to various locations around the world, but its longstanding relationship with Gulfport means that each time a new wing stationed here opens up shop, there is always a gift given in memory of those who have served here. In 2007, the wing gave away more than $1 million worth of gifts to local businesses and organizations during its 10th anniversary celebration. This year’s event will be even bigger, as it coincides with World Balloon Festival weekend. Gulfport is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,393 at the 2010 census. Gulfport is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River. It is bordered to the northwest by Anacostia Township and to the northeast by Meridian Township. The first settlers in what is now Gulfport were drivers for wagon trains traveling upriver from Louisiana and Arkansas. By 1836, there were about fifty people living in Gulfport when Andrew Jackson was elected president. In 1838, James Kildare opened a ferry across the river to connect Gulfport with Mobile Bay. The first store in what is now Gulfport was built on State Street in 1847 by Julius Moseley. In 1861, after Confederate forces invaded Arkansas and attempted to move downriver towards Memphis, Mississippi, Federal troops arrived at Gulfport and occupied it for three weeks before allowing residents back into their homes. That year saw also the opening of what would become one of the most famous stores in all of America: Gresham's Department Store on Congress Street which became known as "The Cotton Exchange." In 1865, during Reconstruction following the Civil War, many African Americans were brought over from Africa as slaves and worked within local mills; this helped contribute to renewed trade alongwith new construction throughout downtown including a canal system that linked two adjacent creeks (the current CanalWalk). After World War II ended milling efforts declined but remain important today with several large employers such as ChevronTexaco still operating downtown among others After years of growth – largely due to Interstate 44 – relatively few people live or work downtown anymore making it an attractive location for businesses seeking scale or easy access to transportation hubs like I-44/Mississippi Avenue while preserving its unique character complete with Art Deco architecture dating back more than 100 years

It is home to several museums including the Gulfport Museum of Art and History which features works by artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe and Edward Hopper; as well as numerous archives including those of the United States Coast Guard Cutterboat Healy which is registered to Gulfport; and Mississippi State University's campus at Jacksonville Landing which is home to several colleges/universities including Ole Miss College; Florida A&M University; Mississippi State University-Jacksonville Landing School of Business; Jackson State University; Delta Air Lines'Jackson Airport Terminal 3A ; Custom House Maritime Museum ; USS Constitution Museum ; National Register -listed Intrepid Shipwreck (1797) .
Gulfport was founded in 1872 by John T. Marshall as the first port of call on the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, becoming a major grain shipping and rail center. By 1910, Gulfport had become a leading city on the Mississippi River. The population peaked at 120,000 in 1920, but declined after World War I and the Great Depression. In recent years, however, Gulfport has rebounded thanks to its location on the world's largest inland waterway and its strong economic base.
