Grenada, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson Micropolitan Statistical Area. Grenada is located on State Route 9W and ZIP Code 72002. It is a small farming community with few commercial enterprises and most residents are self-employed farmers or business owners. Grenada has one high school and one middle school which serve the community primarily through educational opportunities for its students. The first settler in Grenada was James Aiken who arrived in 1829 from North Carolina. He built a cabin on a clearing near present day downtown Grenada and named it "Aiken's Landing". In 1830, Aiken married Miss Jane Childers of nearby Prentiss County and they started to grow crops on their farmstead. Mrs Childers died in 1834, leaving four children: James (1835-1915), John (1837-1921), Sarah (baptized December 12th 1840), and Margaret (baptized December 11th 1843). James Aiken remarried in 1845 to Miss Elizabeth White of adjacent Choctaw County. They had two children: James Aiken Jr.(1846-1927) and Elizabeth White(1848-1925). In 1865, Mr Jourdain moved his family to what is now called "Hollywood" after purchasing 1/2 acre of land off stage right where he would later build his historic plantation home "(now known as Historic Hollywood"). After several years of cultivation by Mr Jourdain & family their corn crop failed so they turned to raising cotton; however this venture also failed because there were no marketable qualities associated with cotton grown in that area at that time. In 1872 they purchased some adjoining land along Highways 3&5 south of Jacksonsville from Gadsden resident Solomon Waddell for $8 per acre ($40 total). From these new acquisitions, they began planting rice fields within two years; however again due to lack thereof marketability this venture also failed despite numerous attempts by them (& other local farmers) over many years culminating finally with the establishment of a branch office for the Meridian Cotton Company located within Hwy 5 east of present day downtown Grenada on October 10th 1899; under direction from then President McKinley James Aiken Sr., widow Elizabeth White & five children traveled down Highway 9W from Choctaw County November 6th 1898 when an idea was born while driving back home after harvesting myrrh trees near Tupelo; thenceforth designated as “The Great Migration” aimed at landing African Americans free if possible just prior to Christmas 1896 when newly created United States opened its doors On July 15th 1902 Granadian people organized themselves into nine branches or “villages” under the leadershipof Monsignor George Washington Browne who served as supreme leader until his death on September 25TH 1902 but permanently headquartered at Hwy 5 crossing over into Choctaw County effective October 10TH 1899 Upon Monsignor Washington Browne’s death all villages united effective October 10TH 1899 becoming known asgrenadian national movement led by Rev Dr Fenton Locke officiating during funeral services conducted by Rev Dr Franklin Denny Greenleaf

Grenada, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 2,825 at the 2010 census. Grenada was founded in 1814 by brothers Moses and Solomon Pratt. Until the late 19th century, it was one of the most important cotton plantations in Jackson County. In 1892, when white farmers began to replace black workers on plantations with automated irrigation systems, Grenada became one of the first towns to be affected. The town lost its importance as a cotton plantation after World War II but has continued to experience growth in other sectors since then. The original inhabitants of Grenada were Native Americans who arrived from nearby Stonington Island in search of land and resources during the Mississippian culture period (circa 1500-1600). After their arrival, the natives built rectangular huts that are still visible today on Main Street near present-day grenadamanco Middle School. They also harvested wild plants and hunted game for subsistence purposes until whites came into contact with them about 1740. White settlers began arriving inJackson County around 1800 after being pushed out of what is now Alabama by Indian raids. By 1800+, there were about 100 white households living in Jackson County; however, development only accelerated after 1830 when Congress passed an act known as the Comstock Law which limited natural slave trade within America’s boundaries. This law led to increased demand for labor on plantations throughout Mississippi and Southeast Louisiana where slavery thrived unencumbered until 1863 when it was abolished by President Abraham Lincoln under his Emancipation Proclamation following three years of civil war effort。 In 1814, brothers Moses and Solomon Pratt founded Grenada with assistance from friends and family members living outside of Tennessee or Kentucky where they operated a cotton plantation before moving back home two years later to start another plantation near Pensacola Beach Texas due to poor soil conditions thereabouts (). Another brother Isaac developed a post office here called Post Office Park which still stands today adjacent to West High School (). In 1830+, George Washington Woodward bought 1/2 acre lot adjoining present day Main Street next door to Geo Waddell & Son Machine Shop () for $50 () which he used as his farmstead until his death circa 1865 (). A store opened here called “The Gables” (), owned by Mrs Martha Crain () between 1840-1845 (). A Baptist church started services here (1863) followed by Methodist services (1868) before becoming Southern Baptist Church #4 between 1865-1923 (). In 1886(), James Burchill organized several grocery stores alongMain Street beginning doing business as Merchants Grocery Co., Ltd.. These businesses grew rapidly enough that they soon moved out onto Second Avenue opposite Market Square () which became known simply as Merchants Row prior thereto!Several more grocery stores relocated here over time including: JB Hiatt Co., Incorporated (1978), Albertsons Incorporated (1988), Kroger Incorporated (1990), Walmart Supercenter LLC(1997)) while also creating several associate businesses such as: Gulfstream Foods plc., PCL Merchandising llc., Simply Jenks Printing & Publishing llc., Lighthouse Pointe Florist inc.).
