The navy has been deployed in Greenwood, Mississippi for over a century. The city was first settled by African Americans in the 1830s and early 1840s. The first naval station in Greenwood was established on the banks of the Yazoo River in 1847. The navy stationed there until 1865, when it moved to Mobile, Alabama. In 1893, Greenwood became the third city in Mississippi to be annexed into Jackson County. The navy continued deployments through World War II and the Korean War. In 1961, the navy relocated its headquarters from Mobile to Jacksonville, Florida. Since then, Greenwood has been home to both the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and Naval Air Station Jacksonville (NAFJ). From 1990-1994, Greenwood also served as host city for Commander-in-Chief Fleet Week commemorating Operation Desert Storm (1991). As of 2016, Navy Shipyards is located within City limits of Jacksonville and this will continue with future deployments The history of military deployment in Greenwood dates back to 1847 when black slaves were brought overland from Africa to work on plantations downriver from what is now Memphis. One such slave owner was Colonel John Troup who leased land near present day Greenwood on which he built a plantation house known as "Troup's Landing". When war broke out between America and France in 1812 Troup decided his slaves could not help him fight against Napoleon Bonaparte so he set them free and purchased them all new white bodiesguardians named after himself: John Baptist Troup (1811-1865), James Turner Troup (1820-1892), Ebenezer Rice Troup Jr.(1827-1904), Arthur Baldwin Reeves(1831–1920). Greenwood, Mississippi is a small town in Yazoo County, Mississippi. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Blacks make up 83% of Greenwood's population and Latinos make up 6%. Greenwood has a strong economy based on agriculture, manufacturing, and service industries. Retail sales are highest in the town center and along US 82. The community started off as a slaveholding plantation near present day Greenville. The first white settler in what is now Greenwood was John Denton in 1839. Denton donated land to form the town square and built several homes for himself and his family. The first school was built in 1840 by Mrs Jno Fayette Whitehead as a means of providing education to black children living in nearby plantations. In 1865, when Confederate General Pemberton ordered all blacks within Jackson to leave for fear of detection, most black residents chose to leave than stay and fight for the Confederacy under terms set by Union General Ulysses S Grant. A few hundred (mostly women) stayed behind to tend their plantations until they were liberated by Union forces on April 9th 1865. By 1870, Greenwood had about 1,200 residents with over 100 businesses including two banks and four churches which continued operation while slaves worked on their plantations outside of town limits (this practice ended with cotton planting becoming more mechanized).
