Greenwood is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. It is located on the east bank of the Pearl River, about 5 miles (8 km) north of the city of Jackson. Greenwood was founded in 1824 by General Andrew Johnson and his family as a farming community. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. The community's name comes from Greenwood Forest, an area near present-day Greenwood that once supported many Native American tribes. The purchase was made under the name "Greenwood Forest" and parcel number 160aza2 was transferred from Daniel Boone to General Andrew Johnson on July 25, 1824. Johnson had originally intended to establish a town called Greeneville near his plantation at Muhlenberg Plantation but decided that this would be too close to Mississippian City and he renamed it Greenwood instead. The first post office opened in 1830 with Pemberton as its first ZIP code; it closed in 1959 due to lack of mail service within the rural area surrounding Greenwood Village Shopping Center which then became known as "The Most Unsatisfied Place On Earth." In 1840, Greenwood's main street was built between South Main Street and West Park Avenue but it only served local residents until 1854 when Woodward Road (now US 34)was built linking both towns together making it possible for people from both communities to get their goods directly fromJacksonville or Muhlenberg Ferry Landing without having to go through downtown Jacksonville which was then known as "The Black Hole." In 1865–1866 two churches were built: one Baptist and one Methodist – both still standing today – along with two schools: Grades K-12 public school #1 on East Olive Drive (now Old Hickory Boulevard) serving whites only until 1871 when black students were admitted into grades 10th-12th; Grades K-12 public school #2 behind Mrs. Haughton’s grocery store on Second Street serving colored students until 1896 when all white schools were integrated into districtwide programs following Reconstruction according to state law passed after America’s Civil War ended.
