The first white settler in Greenwood was John Chaney and his wife Rebecca Chaney in 1819. Some early settlers were Isaac Hawkins and George Payne. In 1824, Greenwood was platted and named for General James Fenton Greene who had served asGovernor of Tennessee during the Mexican–American War. By 1830, Greenwood had a store and log schoolhouse. A Methodist Episcopal church was built in 1834; it burned down in 1886 but was rebuilt and enlarged. In 1836, Greenwood became an Indian Territory under the Treaty of Hopewell which ended the American Civil War on April 9th that year. The treaty ceded all land east of the Mississippi River to Great Britain including present-day Greenwood Township along with other areas such as Meridianville, Tupelo, Bolivar Heights and Vicksburg Landing until they were sold back to the United States following Reconstruction by President Ulysses S Grant in 1887. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, most black residents left for northern states where opportunities were better. In 1907–08 Jock Mahoney started a grocery store which became one of Greenwood's main industry until its closure in 1978. In 1955–56 local voters approved a measure ratifying racial integration into their municipal government which lasted through 1967 when African Americans began to reenter the community primarily through businesses controlled by whites. The community also developed some successful businesses such as a tobacco farm, grocery store, and bakery. In the 1940s and 1950s, Greenwood experienced significant growth due to World War II. Many factories established themselves in the city during that time period; these factories produced goods for both military use and civilian consumption. After the war ended, Greenwood slowly began to decline until it reached its current state in the 1970s.
