Greenwood, Mississippi is a small town located in the Jackson County seat of Greenwood. The population was 5,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The town has been inhabited since early times and was known as "The Meadow" for its rich loam soil. Coffee production began in Greenwood in the 1800s and it continues to play an important role in the economy today. In 1869, Nicholas-Jacques Boulanger started up a coffee factory in Greenwood that became one ofthe most successful coffee businesses in America. This company produced some ofthe world's first whole beans coffee and continued to produce high quality coffee until it closed its doors in 1971. In 1926, JB&J Coffee Company merged with Peet's Coffee & Tea Company to form JB&J Corporation which remains one of the largest coffee companies worldwide today. Around this time, Greenwood also became home to one ofthe first professional brewing facilities for espresso machines when Italian machine maker Federico Zanussi moved his commercial operation from Italy to Greenwood in 1960. Over time, many other local businesses have joined forces with JB&J Corporation including Byerly's Hardware & Cafe (now by Moorestown Creek Coffee), Dairy Queen (now Arkadelphia Dairy), Litton Furniture Store (now Litton Home Shopping) and First National Bank (now First National Community Bank). In 2001, JB&J Corporation merged with Caffe Nero Trust Development Co., Inc., making it one ofthe biggest caffeine businesses on the planet.
