Greenwood is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,582 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is the home of Greenwood State University and the Greenwood Cemetery. The first European settler in what is now Greenwood was James Fenton who arrived in 1796. The town was platted in 1827 and named for General Nathaniel P. Greene, an American Revolutionary War general and signer of the Treaty of Paris that ended the war. In 1871, Greenwood became one of five townships in Jackson County to be organized into a separate county when it was created from parts of Mobile County. Greenwood has been noted for its fruit crops such as cotton and sweet potatoes, as well as its asbestos manufacturing which led to local economic hardship during the early 21st century Great Recession. However, recent years have seen some growth with businesses starting up around golf courses and other recreational activities that have drawn people back to downtown Greenwood. According to the 2010 census, there are three residential areas within Greenwood: Bushnell Heights east of I-10 on US 271; Northwest Side west of I-10 on US 61; and Northeast Side north of I-10 on US 82/ 4th Street. These areas had a total population of 711 households out of a total population of 3,582 residents according to 2000 Census data compiled by the Mississippi Bureau Of Statistics (MBS). According to MBS data from 2006–2010,—the Edmund Pettus Bridge Area had 559 households while Eastside had 514 households—-most residents living in Bushnell Heights or Northwest Side neighborhoods were African American with no white residents resident therein outside those specific neighborhoods during this time period . In 2006—the year before Barack Obama came into office—Jackson County had only 9 percent black residents while all but one parish within Jackson County (Golden Triangle) contained over 50 percent black residents making it difficult for any neighborhood or area within city limits to maintain significant levels or numbers minority populations throughout their entirety without having substantial amounts thereof concentrated therein
