This event is reported to have inspired Jackson to become an advocate for Indian removal and later become President of the United States. Greenwood became a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 19th century because it was a safe place for runaway slaves to go. Many African Americans who were caught up in slavery were released into Greenwood before being transported further westward to other parts of North America. In 1865, following the American Civil War, General Robert Ewell's Confederate forces burned down all of Greenwood after capturing many Union soldiers there including Federal Marshal John Bengeyer Jr.. The burning of Greenwood left an lasting impression on local residents who still refer to it as "the Burned-Down City." After Reconstruction ended in 1877, white supremacists used Greenwood as a training ground for their paramilitary organization called White League Militia. This group engaged in violent activities such as robbing businesses and attacking black people across Stark County until they were disbanded in 1907. As African Americans began moving back into this area starting in the late 1940s (during World War II), they encountered increased discrimination from whites which caused some economic stability problems for Greenwood until recent times when those issues have largely subsided.
