In 1836, Greenwood became the county seat of Hancock County after it was moved from nearby Meridian. In 1830, David Griggs built a log cabin in what is now the downtown core of Greenwood. The first post office in Greene opened on October 25, 1830 with David Griggs as its first employee. The present company house was built around 1910 and designed by architect Isaac Prentice Jr.. It has been designated as a Mississippi State Historical Marker historical building number 6706. Greenwood's economy changed significantly during World War II when the war led to an increase in munitions production at nearby Savannah Arsenal; this resulted in an influx of workers into Greenwood and other areas of Hancock County that had been closed off from industry during World War I because of prohibition laws.
