There is no doubt that coffee has been a part of the Greenwood community for centuries. The first recorded mention of coffee in this area is from 1767, when John Wood Robinson made a trade with a group of Indians in what is now Greenwood. Coffee was also mentioned in local newspapers in the 1800s. The first commercial production of coffee in Greenwood began around 1845. At that time, the town was located on the banks of the Yazoo River, and it was necessary to transport beans and other goods long distances by wagon or train. This process required a lot of effort and labor, which led to some early entrepreneurs developing businesses within the town. These businesses included J.B. Henson’s Grocery and Clothing Store, Waggoner’s Brewery, and Pugh & Sons Wharfage. In 1857, Greenwood became an independent municipality under its own government laws. This event marked a major change for the town as it gradually transitioned from an agricultural center into an industrial city with significant commerce interests outside of agriculture. During this time period, many new industries were established within the boundaries of Greenwood: engineering companies such as Blythe Iron Works and Pugh & Sons Steel Company (founded by Augustus Pugh), textile mills such as Higginsons millinery company (founded by Elias Higgins), lumberyards such as Stephenson Lumber Company (founded by Alfred Stephenson), papermaking plants such as Nash Manufacturing Company (established by George Nash), bakery operations including Joe Baker’s grocery store (established by Joseph Baker) and Mrs. Maytag’s house bakery (established by Mary Maytag). Many people who lived in Greenwood during this time period have left their mark on our community both through their work life experiences and their cultural impact on our residents over these years. Some notable examples include: John Alderferding who served as Mayor from 1951-1955; Addie Mae Johnson who co-founded Delta Arts Council ; Julius Erving who played professional basketball for teams throughout Mississippi; Alice Waters whose award-winning restaurant was opened in Berkeley Square ; Driscoll Dearborn who founded First Baptist Church ; Reva Jameson-Elmore who founded First Presbyterian Church ; Edwin Edwards Jr., later known as “Pee Wee Reese” – one half of “The Jackson 5″CNN/NBC TV show; Willis Reed -onehalf owner/presidente d Marshall Fields Supermarkets Inc.; Jessie Owens -the black American sprinter who won three gold medals at the 1948 Summer Olympics; Carol Burnett -an Emmy Award winning actress best known for her role on sitcom “The Cosby Show”

Greenwood, Mississippi is a small town located in the Gulf of Mexico section of Mississippi. It was founded in 1819 by James Greenwood and his wife, Susannah. The Greenwood family ranched and mined coal for generations until most of their land was taken over by the federal government in the late 1800s. The Greenwood community later became an agricultural center with cotton production accounting for most of its economic activity until the early 21st century. The Greenwood community is home to a number of historical landmarks, including the James Fenton House, which served as the original home of Judge John Fenton; and Browns Mill, which was built in 1892 as one of the first irrigation systems in America. The mill still produces flour and other products today. Other attractions includeiah Cemetery and Parkview Cemetery, which are both adjacent to Greenwood High School; Heritage Hall Museum; and Greenwood Baptist Church, which is one of only two churches remaining from when the town was founded. Greenwood has experienced significant changes over time, including becoming a city in 2001 after being annexed by Jackson; losing its status as a rural community after Hurricane Katrina destroyed many homes and businesses ; experiencing population growth due to neighboring towns annexing into it during latter part of 20th century; gentrification that has led to increased crime rates among young professionals who live near major metropolitan areas ; persistent flooding that has caused damage to numerous properties since 2003 ; and increasing perception that it suffers from racism due to disparities seen within its demographics between black/African Americans (BAA) residents compared with white/non-BAA residents

Greenwood, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Greenwood has been inhabited by Native Americans since the early 18th century and was first settled by English settlers in 1796. It became a town in 1837 and was named for General John Greenwood, who died during the American Revolution. In 1865, Greenwood was burned to the ground by Confederate forces as part of their attempt to destroy all Union supplies moving through Jackson County. The community slowly rebuilt and grew over the next few decades until it reached its current size in 1960. Greenwood is home to several historical sites including the courthouse, cotton gin, schoolhouse, old millrace and cemetery.
