Greenwood is a small town in Mississippi that is home to the Army National Guard. The Greenwood Army National Guard was established on December 1, 1862, during the Civil War. The Greenwood unit fought in the Battle of Chickamauga and Battle of Missionary Ridge. In 1865, the Greenwood unit was disbanded and its members were transferred to other units in Mississippi. From its inception, the Greenwood Army National Guard has been dedicated to support our military men and women who serve our country. Greenwood is a town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,584 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. It is home to Greenwood High School and the Greenwood Community College. The first permanent settler in what became Greenwood was John Wesley Hardin in 1824. He founded a cotton plantation on the present site of Greenwood Village. A post office called Greenwood was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it closed in 1865. In 1840, General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, Colonel George Moultrie purchased land east of downtown for $2 per acre (0.86 km²). The Moultrie Homecoming Civil War Museum preserves evidence of this purchase including an original cashier's drawer from that period and artifacts fromMoultrie's tenure as governor of Mississippi from 1841 to 1845. In 1861, when Confederate general Robert Ewell attacked Jackson's home at Elliott House near Memphis with only 100 men against 4500 Union troops under Ulysses S Grant, most of Greenwood contributed rifles and ammunition to help repel the attack; Hardin also aided Ewell financially by selling him rice he had stockpiled for use during the siege. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction efforts led by president Abraham Lincoln were successful in ending slavery throughout much of America they met with some resistance in many sections including Mississippi where white supremacists Wanted Black Men Out lawlessness ensued as violent gangs looted businesses and homes while mobs burned churches which resulted in over 60 deaths around Greenwood alone brownskinned people were targetted most notoriously by Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest who massacred nine black people at a church service near Fort Pillow on October 12th 1865 after leading a group of KKK members into the building seeking refuge from angry mobs outside

Greenwood, Mississippi is a small town located in the eastern Jackson County seat of Greenwood. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is an unincorporated community located within Jackson County and is considered part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town has a history dating back to 1848 when it was called "Erie". In 1865, Greenwood became part of the Union Territory of Mississippi after the American Civil War ended. It was placed within Jackson County in 1870 and its name changed to Greenwood on January 1, 1872. The first post office in Greenwood opened on February 15, 1872. During Reconstruction (1870-1932), Greenwood supported both sides of the civil war but by 1932 had largely become an all-white community. The town became a center for cotton production during this time period due to its access to slave labor and its location near cotton fields. Cotton crops continued to be grown until the early 1990s when there were only a few remaining homes left in the town and most residents had moved away or died from natural causes. As of 2010, only one home still stands in downtown Greenwood which remains property of the local school district. In recent years, many businesses have closed down Pocket Books & Paperie store which reopened as an online store late last year following closure by other retailers over concerns about fire risks with products made without hazardous materials Additionally several restaurants have closed or been replaced by quick service restaurants since 1960s when most people ate out for their meals Furthermore there are now few remnants remaining from that era such as Confederate battle flag flying outside grocery store
Greenwood was founded in 1837 by the Greenwood Race of people. It is one of the oldest towns in Mississippi. The town was originally called "Humphreys" after Colonel Humphrey who owned the land that it stands on. The name was changed to Greenwood because of its location on a bend in the river and because white settlers thought it looked like a green wooded tree. In 1865, Greenwood became a village and in 1887, it became a city.
