Greenville, Mississippi is a town in the US state of Mississippi. The population was 21,916 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. The first white people to set foot in what is now Greenville were French missionaries who arrived in 1796. They founded a mission and named it Fort Moultrie after their captain, Francis Moultrie. The town was established by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the Yazoo River. Wilkinson's strategic location made it an important stop on the Yazoo and lower Tennessee Rivers during the 1810s for traders operating out of Nashville, Tennessee. In 1816, Wilkinson sold land to Elijah Muhammad for $8,000 dollars and became one of his main supporters. In 1823, Muhammad founded Black Hawk County; Greenville became its capital in 1830. A year later, Black Hawk County merged with Hinds County to form Jackson County. Greenville continued to serve as its capital until 1877 when it was moved to Meridian because of sanitary concerns following an outbreak of cholera that season in neighboring Jackson County. Greenville experienced significant growth during Reconstruction due to its key role as a transportation hub connecting Memphis with points north and west through the Deep South.Shortly after Reconstruction ended in 1865, violence broke out between white supremacists and black separatists called "The White League" led by John Brownlee and other leading white supremacists across Gulf Coast states seeking secession from the Union following Brownlee's Raid on Harpers Ferry Inn near Harper's Ferry sock hop (April 14-15 1865).
