Greenville is a small town in the state of Mississippi. The population was 8,746 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Gulfport–Biloxi metropolitan area. Greenville is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 30 miles (48 km) south-southwest of Mobile, Alabama and 45 miles (72 km) southwest of Jackson, Mississippi. The first settlers in what would become Greenville arrived in 1819 from Kentucky. They were led by Capt. Joshua Hogg and acts passed by the General Assembly approved May 14, 1819 entitled "An act to establish a town in this parish" provided for five hundred acres (2 hectares) of land east of Harrison Avenue to be set aside for public use and thenceforward subject to sale at public auction or leasehold forever to persons who may desire it." This act became law when Mississippi Territory was organized on February 3, 1830. On November 10, 1830, Governor Hinds signed an executive order appointing Jno Crain as sheriff and Wm Sibley as justice of peace; these appointments confirmed land grants made January 4th and 5th, 1830 by Lauderdale County under Act No: 24 from James Kugler." On December 15th 1830 commissioners appointed John Kearney surveyor general for this territory with instructions to lay out streets within one mile square including allufial rights adjoining each lot surveyed." The first post office was established in Greenville on March 17th 1831 by order of President James Kugler with Pemberton as its first Postmaster General." In 1840 Joel Garretson built a mill on Pulaski Creek which became known as "Garretson's Mills". The post office closed on July 1st 1840 due to lack of mail service. In 1865 Thompson constructed a dam across Chickasaw River which created Lake Pontchartrain which made Greenville an important port for cotton shipping. With new transportation methods such as railroads development began soon after starting operations around 1900 many businesses moved into Greenville such as hotels and stores while others moved away because they could no longer compete with better connected cities like Jackson or Biloxi
