Greenville experienced several cycles of prosperity and decline during its early years; however, it eventually regained its way as an important center for commerce and culture. In 1850, Greene City became a part of Mississippi Territory; however, it reverted back to its earlier name in 1861 when Mississippi seceded from the Union. In 1865, during the Civil Rights Movement, African Americans began to challenge Jim Crow segregation laws in Greenwood Village near Greenville; this led to increased violence throughout southern Mississippi until integration finally occurred in 1966.
