Greenville is a small, rural town located in Lamar County, Mississippi. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. Greenville is the county seat of Lamar County and is home to the main courthouse and most of the municipal government. The larger towns of Meridian and Tupelo are less residential and more commercial. The history of Greenville dates back to 1819 when it was founded by Captain James Moultrie as a trading post on an island in Yazoo Bay. In 1829, General Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel Alexander Smithhead as his military governor for Lamar County, which included Greenville. From 1830-1833, Greenville served as headquarters for Jackson's army during their campaign against cotton farmers in Alabama and Mississippi. In 1861, after Confederate forces attacked Union troops near Corinth, Mississippi (now Stark County), General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered all civilian property within three miles of Corinth burned to prevent its capture or use as artillery fodder by Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell. This order destroyed much of downtown Greenville with only a few buildings remaining standing from the original community site that had been platted in 1819-20 by Captain James Moultrie and others who participated in its founding. The first settler in what would become known as "Greenville" was Nathaniel Purdy who arrived around 1800 CE according to one source; however other sources place his arrival date around 1792 CE based on historical evidence found at Fort Pillow near Mobile Alabama where he may have landed before moving upriver along the Red River into what would become Lamar County. Purdy's land parcel became part of what would later be called "Moses Lake" which was later drained for irrigation purposes by Daniel Boone and others during the 19th century including Captain James Moultrie who purchased additional land east of Moses Lake from Purdy about 1830 CE further developing what would eventually become known as "Greenville." Captain Moultrie named his new community after himself – James Moultrie Village - because he saw itjunctioned with two other villages on Yazoo Bay – Mona Lisa (named for a white women who ran a ferry service between Memphis Tennessee and Yazoo City)and New Orleans (named for French Huguenot refugees fleeing religious persecution). Captain James Moultrie also donated some land now lying within present day Meridian Police Department boundaries south of Interstate 20 where he built a large dockyard used to haul wood away from his island until 1850 when competition from railroads led him to close operations; however some remains can still be seen today including pumps & dredges used during this time period just outside OfPurdue University's Demopolis Campus entrance on US Highway 90 West adjacent To The Fisher family yard & farmsteads dating back to c1800 DRIVE WEST OF GREENVILLE
