Greenville, Mississippi is a city of over 100,000 people that was founded in 1871. It’s the seat of Hinds County and home to many colleges, including Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU-Carbondale), Ole Miss, and Mississippi State University. The city has been known for its gourmet coffee since at least the 1800s. The first coffee shop in Greenville was called the Coffee House on Main Street. It was opened by a group of men who were interested in meeting new people and learning about coffee. They started serving roasted coffee from their house each morning until they ran out of beans. One of the earliest roasting companies in Greenville was Fidelity Coffee Company which operated from 1892-1914. This company became famous for its Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee which has won several awards over the years including a prestigious award from The World Coffee Awards™ in 2003. In 1915, Mr. Tom White opened his own roastery/cafe called White’s Roastery & Café on Beale Street near downtown Greenville. This business became very successful and continues to operate today as one of the most popular cafes in town with an international clientele. Mr. White also served as mayor of Greenville from 1951-1957 and 1959-1973; he is now considered an important figure in local history thanks to his involvement with the city’s economy during these periods! During World War II, Greenwood Coffee Company was one of two small businesses that supplied oxygen generators to military airfields throughout central Mississippi.* In 1945, Greenwood closed down due to financial difficulties but reopened under new ownership three years later as one of two remaining small roasting companies located within walking distance of all major military bases across central Mississippi!* * Greenwood Coffee closed because it could not compete with larger roasters such as Peet’s or Starbucks when war began† [* See “Coffee: A History lesson for kids”]

Greenville is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Greenville were the Creeks. They occupied a location on the banks of the Arkansas River that became known as "Creek Town". In 1819, Andrew Jackson moved his family from Tennessee to Hinds County and bought land near present-day Greenville. The original courthouse was built in 1825 and was destroyed by a fire in 1861. After much litigation, Jackson's heirs sold the courthouse and other property to Nicholas Gibbs (1790–1868), who laid out Lots 1 and 2 of what is now Greenville on May 12, 1824. Gibbs started building homes on these lots in 1830. By 1840 he had built over 100 homes and named them "Greeneville". He also developed land for cotton plantations and madesignificant contributions to post-Civil War Reconstruction in Mississippi. In 1865, General John Buford arrived in Greenville with Confederate forces during the American Civil War and ordered all white men must leave until Union troops could be withdrawn from the county. Many black Mississippians followed Buford into exile or fled south before being forced back into slavery by Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant after they surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April 1865.

In 1837, Frenchmen Alexandre Lenoir and Nicolas-Jacques Conte developed a process for roasting coffee that gave birth to modern coffee culture. The first grande époque of French coffee was enjoyed by such luminaries as Napoleon Bonaparte and Marie Antoinette. Coffee houses commonly served breakfast, lunch, or dinner with a wide variety of foods including pastries, cakes, cookies, breads, fruits, and savory dishes. Coffee became an important part of the social life of Parisians during this time and it is said that many great minds turned to caffeine for inspiration or relaxation. In 1912 American businessman John Dillingham opened his first espresso shop in New York City’s financial district. This marked the beginning of what would be known as America’s café culture. Dillingham’s cafes quickly become popular tourist destinations frequented by celebrities such as Groucho Marx and Lucky Luciano. Dillingham’s shops continue to serve delicious espresso drinks today as one of New York City’s most popular tourist attractions
The first modern espresso machine was invented by Angelo Marconi in 1895. It used a small metal pot with a steam engine that heated up water and pumped it through a coffee filter to produce coffee.
Greenville was founded in 1837 by the Green family. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Mississippi River and the development of cotton plantations. The town experienced significant economic growth during the antebellum period, but decline in the 1870s and 1880s. In 1911, Greenville became a city. Today, Greenville is a small community with a rich history that includes significant contributions from both local and national leaders.
The first white European settlers in Greenville, Mississippi were John White and his family who arrived in 1795. The town was founded on a plantation that John White purchased from the Creek Indians. It was named after General Andrew Jackson, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as the 11th President of the United States.
