The first European to visit Gautier was Jean Baptiste de La Salle in 1699. He named it after his patron saint, Saint Jacques by the Gulf of Mexico. French explorers visited Gautierre in 1701, 1702, 1703, and 1704 while on their way from Mobile Bay to Pensacola Beach in Florida; they named it Plaquemines because there were no navigable waters between that point and Mobile Bay. In 1819, General Nathan Bedford Forrest bought land near present-day Gautiere for $5 per acre from David Calloway of Corinth who had bought it from the Chickasaw people earlier that year. Forrest began construction on what would become known as Fort Pickens which he designated "Fort Pillow" in honor of his victory over Andrew Johnson at Bull Run on July 21st, 1814 during the American Civil War (1811-1815). In December 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived at Fort Pickens with an army seeking revenge for Johnson's loss at First Manassas on October 14th one year earlier (1860). On January 5th 1862 Ewell ordered Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Butler to open fire upon Confederate soldiers inside the fortifications without warning or provocation resulting in mass casualties among both Union and Confederate forces within minutes including many officers and men of Butler's force; this event became known as "Pickett's Charge." Gautier was a town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The post office at Gautier was established on October 15, 1849, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on April 1, 1955. The first settler in what is now Gautier was James Hillyer. He arrived in 1837, and by 1840 had built a small cabin on the banks of the Yazoo River. In 1851, John A. Wiggins moved to Gautier from Greenville with his family. Wiggins became one of the most successful businessmen in Jackson County and founded Wiggins Manufacturing Company which manufactured shoes and boots. In 1898, he sold his business to George Wickersham who renamed it Wickersham & Wiggins Corporation. The company continued manufacturing shoes until it merged with Hellman-Lodge Corporation in 1984.
