The Marines of Gautier, Mississippi deployed in World War II as part of the 3rd Marine Division. The division fought in Normandy and the Cotentin Peninsula campaigns, before returning to the United States in 1945. In 1957, Gautier was renamed Fort Benning and the Marines left for good. Gautier, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. It was founded in 1836 by Andrew Jackson and named for General Gautier of the French army who fought in the American Revolution. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. The first white person to live in Gautier was John Hodge. In 1837, he built a cabin on the bluff overlooking Gautier Bayou. He also raised horses and cattle there until his death in 1860. His son John Hodge II continued this business until 1942 when it merged with Piggott Dam Company to form Hinds Power and Light Corporation. After World War II, Gautier became an agricultural community with banana plantations and cornfields as its mainstay occupations. However, these operations began to decline beginning in the 1990s as more people moved into neighboring townships and counties because of discouraged economic development opportunities in nearby Jackson or Tupelo

Gautier grew rapidly during the 1830s, becoming one of the most important towns in Mississippi. A post office was established at Gautier in 1832, and it quickly became an important center for trade and commerce. By 1840, Gautier had reached its peak as a commercial and cultural center. However, economic problems began to develop in the town during the 1840s as cotton prices dropped and labor shortages emerged. In response to these challenges, Gautier authorities implemented aggressive land acquisition policies in order to maintain control over resources within their town. This strategy led to increasedoverty and social tensions within the community. In 1851, local officials negotiated a treaty with the Cherokee nation that allowed Cherokee citizens access to land within Gautier boundaries. This event marked a turning point for Gautier – it became an Indian-free zone once again
