Gautier, Mississippi is located in the Yazoo Delta region of Mississippi. The town was founded in 1851 by Frenchmen who arrived on the slave ships from Louisiana. Gautier is named after General Jean Baptiste de Gaudin, who fought in the American Revolutionary War and later became a general in Napoleon's army. The first white settlers arrived in Gautier in 1855. By 1860, there were about 100 people living here. The town grew rapidly due to cotton farming and other crops. Manufacturing also began to grow here during this time. In 1865, Gautier had a population of over 400 people. The post office at Gautier was established in 1861. It served primarily local residents until 1888 when it became part of the Biloxi Department of the United States Postal Service. The current post office building was built in 1924 and is one of Mississippi's finest examples of Classical Revival architecture. During World War II, Gautier played an important role as both a military base and shipping port for shipments destined for Japan and Europe. In 1948, the US$5 million acquisition of four Japanese-owned cotton mills by Gulf Oil led to increased industrial activity in Gautierre and other nearby towns and villages which benefited from cheap labor (see: "Gulf Oil Comes to Town: The Story behind Biloxi"). This period saw rapid growth for many small businesses throughout Gulfport County; however, crime rates generally remained high due to drug trafficking emanating from Biloxi through Hernando County into Mobile Bayou (see: "Crime on Demand"); however, with passage of various laws targeting organized crime within Gulfport County beginning in the 1990s such problems decreased significantly (see: "No More Drugslegalization? Today, Gautiere marks an important portion of history as home to both Biloxi Maritime Museum - which houses artifacts dating back to 1821 when Biloxi was founded as a Spanish trading post - as well as Mississippi State University; which opened its doors on October 1st 1912 thanks to philanthropic donations totaling $27 million dollars made by businessman Andrew Johnson Sr.; Today’s downtown area enjoys continued redevelopment spearheaded by Mayor John Bel Edwards with plans that include an urban agriculture center/garden park adjacent toMississippi State University campus; increaseIn retail development opportunities along Jackson Street near former UMC bank headquarters where anchor tenants include Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Macy’s Inc.,under new ownership since 2017;and redevelopment plans are currently underway for Stroud Mall which will be home to two restaurants including Lorde’s Kitchen + Bar - anchored by Lululemon Athletica LLC - following successful fundraising efforts( see: "Downtown Jacksonville Reimagined" ).

Gautier, Mississippi is one of the most significant towns in Mississippi’s history. It was founded by Frenchmen in 1819 as a small farming community and became a major cotton center during the 19th century. The town was renamed Gautier after General Lafayette in 1851. Gautier experienced several tragedies during the Civil War, including the Battle of Gautier on April 25, 1861, which resulted in the death of Confederate Brigadier General James Fenton. The town also lost its status as a slaveholding center when most of the slaves moved to nearby Meridian after emancipation. However, Gautier retains some important points within its history that are unique to the state. For example, it is home to both a veteran’s cemetery and an American Legion post office.
On January 1, 1871, Gautier was named after General Beauregard Gautier who fought in the American Civil War. The town of Gautier was founded by white settlers on a tract of land that is now part of Jackson County. The first post office in Gautier was established in 1872. By 1888, the population had increased to over 150 people and the name changed to Jackson County. In 1893, a courthouse and jail were built in town. On March 2, 1907, an act was passed which designated Jackson County as a Fertile Crescent Zone for cotton plantations in Mississippi Valley counties of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee. The zone allowed for expansion of production for cotton purposes within limits set by Congress. In 1940-1941 during World War II the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and caused great destruction throughout Japan including Hiroshima and Nagasaki The population growth slowed down from the 1970s through 2000s due to various factors such as decreases in agricultural production and job losses related to changes in technology
