The Coast Guard is a branch of the military and its mission is to protect maritime interests and support state and local law enforcement. In 1915, the Coast Guard was established in Gautier as a result of the Spanish-American War. At that time, there were no laws governing maritime activity in Louisiana so it was up to the Coast Guard to help patrol the waters. In 1916, Gautier became part of federal territory which made it more difficult for the Coast Guard to provide services but they still did their best. In 1951, an addition was made to the Coast Guard base in Gautier when it was given jurisdiction over alligator land around town. This area had been used for fishing since before Memphis became a city. Today, there are three different branches of the Coast Guard located in Gautier: Patrol Squadron One (PSOne), Navigators Station One (N1), and Sector Three Seven Sixteen (S3 6 16). Each branch provides unique services with a focus on keeping our community safe: PSone focuses on coastal security while N1 provides humanitarian relief; S3 6 16 provides law enforcement support including DUI patrols and search and rescue missions; while Sector 3 7 Sixteen is responsible for patrolling inland waters from Biloxi Bay down to Gulfport Harbor

Gautier's descendants still live in the town today as well as many of their ancestors who were born there before 1861 when Mississippi became a Confederate state (it re-joined the Union after the war). One of the most significant aspects of Gautiere's history is its role as a site where America's first cotton gin complex was built beginning in1858. This structure, now known as State House Plaza, helped make Gautiere one of America's leading cotton growing areas during this time period. Notable residents include Andrew Johnson (the first U S president), George Washington Carver (founder and first director of American University), J P Morgan (presidential nominee on Wilson's presidential campaign), Thomas Edison (co-inventor of the lightbulb and electric chair), Fenton Osborn (presidential candidate on Woodrow Wilson’s ticket) and more recently Drayton Waddle (senator from Tennessee).
