In 1865, after Confederate forces sacked Corinth, much of the city was destroyed along with many of its residents. By 1890, however, most of Corinth had recovered and had become an important commercial center with a population over 20,000. Today, Corinth is an important cultural and educational center located within Jackson County on Mississippi's east coast.
