When the Spanish navigator, Columbus, sighted what he thought was an island in the Indies on October 14th, 1492, his mind was filled with wonder and excitement. He named it Islay after his patron saint, Isidore of Seville (1163-1236). Three days later he sailed into what is now Mississippi Sound and landed on an islet that he named Santa Maria de la Trinidad. This event led to the founding of Columbus City by colonists from Spain in 1699. The land that would become Mississippi was first surveyed by French traders in the 17th century as part of a trade route between France and Britain. The area lay within British America until Louisiana Purchase in 1803 made it part of the U.S.A., but because it lacked a port of entry it remained under Spanish control until 1825 when Mexico ceded it to us as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson set out on a march through Alabama and Mississippi to rid them of Mexican forces who had Recently invaded their states during War for Independence which ended with Mexico's defeat at Alamo Heights outside San Antonio de Bexar some weeks earlier. As he entered Jackson County near Memphis he noticed a large mound lying northeast of town covered with brush and tree stumps whereupon he ordered his men to clear away all vegetation so that they could see what appeared to be a road leading off into the woods beyond without entering any buildings or passing any houses or other human activity whatever for more than ten miles. Thisroad has been called "Majestic Road" ever since because only military personnel were allowed access at that time! When General Jackson arrived at its end about two miles from present day Memphis (the first village established there), one can see today still standing Corinthian style mansion built by Major Samuel Johnston commanding unit 6th Regiment Tennessee Infantry Militia Pikeman Company “D” dated 1800-1806 located just east side street corner currently marked Julia Butler house property line ol East Tennessee Avenue
