Columbus, Mississippi is a city in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County and it is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white European to set foot in what is now Columbus was Giovanni de' Noli on July 4, 1492. He named his land Santa Luna after Saint Lucy of Hungary. In 1814, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and moved the American Embassy from Paris to Rome because he believed that America needed an Embassies in all of Europe to show our strength and independence. When he took office as President, he ordered construction begin on a road that would connect Mobile with Athens (then Stroudsburg), Alabama. The road was called "The Jackson Road" and eventually became US-5A. In 1828-29?, Columbus lost its status as a town when it merged with neighboring Meridianville into Meridianville & Meridianville Township which then became Meridian County’s only municipality In 1836 Nathaniel Peebles founded Enterprise Academy which later became known as Peebles University In 1840 Christopher Boothe bought 1/4 acre of land adjacent to what would become Columbus for $10 On this lot lies today's downtown core including parts of two old brick buildings: Exchange Bank building (1854) on Third Street NW and State Capitol Annex Building (1901) located at 6th Avenue NW corner First Street NE . These structures are significant not only for their architecture but also for their history - they were both built during Reconstruction era when cotton economy was booming On November 15th 1847 Dr. Averell Harriman organized a group made up mostly white men from various plantations around the stateof Mississippi to purchase 640 acres northwest of Corinth from John Chilton who had leased it from Generalobert Polk since 1800 For use as a plantation or military encampment this area would be known as "Harriman's Campground." This event marked beginning ofvast slave trade through Mississippi River
