Clinton, Mississippi is a small town in the Delta region of Mississippi. It is located on the banks of the Yazoo River, about 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Jackson and 50 miles (80 km) south of Memphis. The town was founded in 1874 by John Clinton and his wife, Martha. It was named for President James K. Polk, who died in 1885. The town has a population of about 3,000 people and is home to two universities: Southern University & State College and Jackson State University. The local paper, The Clarion-Ledger, has been published since 1889. Clinton was incorporated as a village in 1878. In 1903 it was designated as a city by an act of the state legislature; it became a full-time municipality in 1907. In 1974 it merged with nearby Meridian to form Clinton-Meridian Township; the merger was approved by the Michigan General Assembly and became effective January 1, 1975. Clinton is a town in Jackson, Mississippi, United States. The population was 8,288 at the 2010 census. It was known as "The Hill" because it was the hill that stood between Jackson and Memphis on which the two cities were founded. Clinton takes its name from General Robert E. Lee's house in nearby Springdale. When white settlers arrived in what is now Jackson County in 1819, they called it "New Beginnings." They built a small cabin near present-day Clinton and began to clear land for farming. In 1827, they voted to change their name to "Clinton." This name stuck because General Robert E. Lee used it when he visitedJackson in 1868 and 1870 while campaigning for office as a Democrat against incumbent Andrew Johnson. In 1872, after the American Civil War ended, members of the Confederate Congress met at Clinton to discuss how to reestablish slavery in Tennessee and other southern states where it had been abolished following the war. One proposal proposed that Union soldiers be allowed back into these areas under certain conditions: they would have to give up their arms and leave their homes; no black people would be allowed to own property or vote; free labor could only be provided by men who agreed to work for wages rather than receive land or citizenship rights; and black people living within those boundaries would not be able to intermarry with white people. The meeting did not result in any new laws being passed but led directly to Reconstruction (1865-1877). During Reconstruction years many African Americans fled South Carolina due to violence and intimidation by slave owners there. Some of these refugees made their way north through Arkansas into Mississippi Territory before finally reaching Union territory near Springfield, Illinois on March 14, 1871 – three days after President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order creating Kansas City district (later St Louis district) with intentions of allowing freed slaves freedom there too once Kansas became an state but without giving chaseto those fugitives (the largest mass migration of blacks ever recorded)). After Reconstruction ended some African Americans decided that northern Mississippi was more welcoming than south Louisiana so they started moving here starting around 1880s until most of them got jobs doing agricultural work on plantations during World War I when cotton prices plummeted due largely to US entry into WWI +++MUSIC+++
