In 1916, Captain John Crouch donated an airplane to the Air Service as a gift from his company to help provide service to American troops during World War I. The plane was used for reconnaissance missions over Europe and was eventually sold to Germany in 1923. On July 4, 1947, General Curtis LeMay presented Secretary of Defense James Forrestal with a Boeing 707 aircraft as part of President Truman’s “National Aeronautics and Space Administration Plan for Progress” speech at Georgetown University. This marks the first time that the USAF had gifted an Aircraft acquisition officer (AOA) with an aircraft design award. Since then, other gifts have been given such as a Lockheed F-15 Eagle fighter jet purchased by the USAF in 1994, or an experimental High Speed Demonstrator helicopter that is currently being flown by Special Operations Forces within Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Hawaii. Clinton, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 8,906 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. Clinton has been the home of the Jones family since 1821. In 1847, General Andrew Johnson appointed Colonel John A. Jones as Commissioner for Roads and Canals in Jackson County and he developed what is now known as Clinton into a small community with sawmills and grist mills. In 1870, Governor Prentiss appointed Colonel James Waddell to manage this new community and it grew rapidly from 1000 residents in 1870 to over 2500 by 1880. The cotton industry declined in the early 20th century but revived during World War II with the arrival of several thousand African American soldiers who worked in munitions plants throughout the country. The town ceased to exist when it was merged with nearby Greenville on July 1, 2008Effective date: 07/01/2008 Clinton was platted on December 17, 1821 by Captain James Giddings as part of a land grant to Major William HaldaneJones from President George Washington Jr.. This area later became known as Clinton Township after Colonel John A.
