Clarksdale, Mississippi is a small town located in the Jackson County panhandle of Mississippi. The population was 9,813 at the 2000 census. Clarksdale is one of the most beautiful and Historic towns in Mississippi. It has been designated a National Historical Landmark by the United States government. The first white settlers to arrive in what is now Clarksdale were Baptist missionaries from Tennessee who named it after their home state of Kentucky. The original Saginaw people also lived there for some time before moving on to other parts of Jackson County. The first permanent white settlement in what is now Clarksdale was founded by J.D. McAllister on land that he acquired from Chiefdom Shreve in 1827. He built a cabin and named it Fort McAllister because he thought it would be impregnable against Indian attacks. In 1830, John Corder became the first postmaster here and soon proved himself as an excellent administrator and promoter of trade within his new community. He donated land to build a courthouse and jail which still stand today, as well as several other important structures including a schoolhouse and grocery store. Clarksdale experienced its earliest growth during Reconstruction when many black men moved here to work on reconstruction projects following theCivil War (1861-1865). Many new businesses were formed here such as Grafton Clothing Co., Post & Mail Telegraph Company, Prentiss Glasses & Silversmiths, Southern Fertilizer Depot, Mrs Perkins' Bakery and many more afterwards! In 1865, Clarksdale residents voted unanimously to secede from Mississippi under the guidance of General Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War effort! The town quickly resumed normalcy once again but faced many challenges such as plant closings during World War II due to military action nearby; however, they have since regained much of their former glory thanks to restoration work carried out over recent years!
