Clarksdale, Mississippi is a small town located in the Delta region of southern Mississippi. The population of Clarksdale was 8,521 at the 2010 census. The first military deployment to Clarksdale occurred on November 1, 1865 when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest left for Memphis to lead an invasion of Tennessee. The local military unit that responded to this deployment was the 3rd Regiment Mississippi Volunteer Infantry Regiment which was composed of black soldiers from Clarksdale. This regiment fought in several engagements during the Civil War and after the war disbanded in 1865. In 1967, then-Governor George Wallace ordered all American males age 18 and over to register with the state government. All Mississippians were required to register with either their county or city government if they resided in a township or village within Jackson County or if they lived within 25 miles of any municipality within Jackson County except for Berryville and Batesville. On October 15, 1967, Mayor James Gannon of Clarksdale submitted a request for donations from citizens in order to purchase weapons for local law enforcement officers who would be deployed at nearby Oxford University during National Guard duty. The president of Oxford University donated $1,000 towards this purchase which allowed the Clarksdale Police Department to acquire handguns and shotguns. In 1975, Governor Ross Barnett authorized the establishment of a Special Unit Commandos unit tasked with providing training and support for state highway patrol officers who would be activated as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which involved invading South Vietnam. This special unit comprised black soldiers from Clarksdale who had been trained by U S Marine Corps troops stationed in South Vietnam before being sent back home without combat experience. This unit operated out OF THE BOX only as advisors/ trainers - never engaging in combat assignments themselves In 2006, then-Mayor Jim McDermott requested funds from citizens in order to equip local fire departments with assault rifles so that they could provide more protection against crime while also serving as backup forces should emergency situations arise such as Katrina aftermaths etcetera In response to this request general manager Don Sims donated $2,500 towards this purpose which fully funded four new assault rifles for use by our fire departments

In 1892, a post office was established at Clarksdale with the name of Fayetteville; however, it soon became apparent that no one would visit this small town because there were no stores or hotels in town. A new post office was established in 1895 with the name of Clarksdale and has been in operation ever since. In 1907, Gwin's grocery store opened up on Main Street and quickly began becoming known as one of the most popular businesses in town. In 1951, General Motors announced plans to build a large factory near Clarksdale; however, due to protests from local citizens who felt their neighborhoods would be destroyed if such an important company moved into their community, GM pulled out of its plan two years later. However, other companies followed suit and within a few years Clarksdale had become home to several major manufacturing plants including Ford Motor Company's Oak Ridge Plant located just east of town on US Highway 81 (now I-10) and Chrysler Corporation's Pontiac plant across from South High School which manufactured Buick automobiles until 1984 when they closed down for good. Today many people still live in Clarkstown or commute to work outside Jackson every day; however some businesses have reopened such as Gwin's Grocery which continues to serve residents from both towns until late into night thanks to its long hours!
