Canton, Mississippi is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Delta County, Mississippi. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The history of Canton can be traced back to 1823 when it was founded as a plantation by John Denton and James Cockerill. In 1827, Canton became part of Calhoun County when that county was created from parts of Hinds and Madison counties. The first post office in Canton was established in 1830. In 1853, Canton began to develop as a cotton center due to its location on the bank of the Pearl River. By 1875, it had become one of the leading cotton towns in Mississippi due to its productivity and low prices for agricultural goods. In 1907, Canton lost its status as a cotton town after being forced to surrender its right to sell local rice at an inflated price because rice production had declined since it became an important part of Mississippian culture
Canton was founded in 1824 by the Canton Parish Committee. It was named after Captain John Canton who, according to one source, "made a discovery of salt on an island near Mobile Bay." The town became a center for slave trade and cotton production. In 1830, the state legislature granted permission for a public school to be established in the town, which quickly became known as the "Great School of Mississippi". The first teacher was C.S. Hodge. In 1837, there were only 11 residents in Cass County and $2 per capita income; however, by 1840, there were over 100 residents and $10 per capita income. By 1865, there were over 1,000 residents and $20 per capita income. The great fire of 1862 destroyed much of downtown Cassville but did not touch Canton; this is possibly because it was located on higher ground than other towns in southern Mississippi during that time period. In 1865-1866 the cotton crop failed due to insects that had been introduced from slavery into free states; however, some people thought that this could have been another reason why canton grew rapidly during that time period: its location made it very easy for transportation to get agricultural goods to market
