Canton, Mississippi is a city in Stark County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 13,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stark County. The first settler in what is now Canton was James Covington in 1824. In 1860, it was part of Sumner County and then Jackson County before becoming Stark County. The cotton gin was built here in 1853 by Andrew Jordon and became one of the most important businesses in Canton. In 1865, Canton became a stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War because Union forces were afraid that Confederate sympathizers would be able to leave town if they knew about it. In 1907, airmail service began between Nashville and Jacksonville using an experimental plane called The Comet which flew over Canton from July through October of that year. Canton has been home to many different types of businesses including auto parts store Pro-Parts Inc., which closed its doors in 2006 after more than 50 years in business; Baptist Church (estimated to have been founded in 1892), which still meets monthly for services; and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (IATA: JAX) which provides passenger service to many cities across Georgia and Alabama as well as various international destinations such as London Heathrow airport and Barcelona's El Prat airport. However, there are also several stores closed due to lack of customers or competition from other businesses within a specific industry - such as Staples Incorporated's locations within walking distance of each other - making downtown something more like a village with small businesses clustering around patches of commercial space instead of one large mall available for shopping throughout the day. Thisowntown area did not experience much gentrification until recent years when larger chains began moving into newer buildings adjacent to Interstate 20z both near downtown and on I-20 southward towards Memphis where Walmart opened up recently giving considerable competition for smaller local businesses not long ago buried under Walmart knockoffs/ replicas

Canton is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 146 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Canton was Captain John Ledward Stephens in 1802 when he and his party explored the lower Mississippi River region for new land for the United States. After landing on the bank of the Monongahela River near present-day Mount Carmel, Stephens built a cabin and began trading with Native Americans. In 1805, he purchased from the Chickasaws an acre (0.40 km2) of land atpresent-day Canton and named it after himself, as did other early settlers in this part of Mississippi. In 1811, General Andrew Jackson founded Fort Sumter on I-10 south of present-day Mount Carmel in order to block Indian migration into southern Tennessee and Kentucky. When Confederate forces moved north to confront him during the American Civil War, they occupied Fort Sumter and bombardment by Union warships destroyed it on April 12, 1861 (4 years before Canton's incorporation). After Fort Sumter's destruction, most residents fled to Mobile or Nashville due to Union military occupation throughout much of 1861–1865; however, some families remained behind and started a small cotton gin business called "Old Mission". In 1865–1866 local leaders petitioned state legislators for incorporation but were unsuccessful because no white people wanted to live near black slaves who worked their plantations nearby. In 1870, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all African Americans living within 10 miles (16 km) of Nashville be deported; however, many Pershing Avenue residents stayed behind until after Reconstruction ended in 1865. Many White Mississippians took up residence around these displaced Black residents while some businesses reopened which helped revive downtown Canton during this time period also known as "The Gilded Age." However starting in 1881 many Whites abandoned downtown Canton again as cotton prices collapsed leading to increased poverty among Black residents once again becoming jobsless earners once more followed by crime rates that skyrocketed causing several fires throughout those years including one that destroyed most of downtown business district which left many buildings entirely vacant for over 30 years until reactivated as an arts center and developmentally challenged housing complex currently known as "The Gilded Cage" beginning in 2013 following a $27 million restoration project initiated by Mayor Jim Strickland also known as "Restoration Square". Canton's economy has been characterized through various periods since its incorporation: pioneer boomtowns phase (1870s), post-boomtown phases (1980s – 1990s), late twentieth century Rust Belt revival phase (2000s – 2010s), current service economy fringe town phase with increasing exodus from city core areas such as education/tourism services centering around Memphis metropolitan area
Canton was founded in 1814 by the same people who founded Jackson, MS. The town was named for General Andrew Canton, a Revolutionary War general and captain of the militia. In 1815, the town received its first school as part of an effort to improve education in the area. By 1830, Canton had a population of about 100 residents. In 1835, Canton became a city and was renamed for James Maney, one of its founders. The city government changed hands several times until it was handed over to the current mayor in 1959. During World War II, Canton served as headquarters for United States Forces Europe (USFET) in Germany.
