Canton, Mississippi is a small town in the southeastern United States. It is the county seat of Benton County and is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles (40 km) south of Mobile, Alabama. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,604. The racial makeup of Canton as reported by the 2010 US Census was 99% Black or African American. The first European to visit what is now Canton was a French explorer named Gaspar de La Salle in 1699. He explored this area and named it after his home town of Paris, France. The first white person to live in what is now Canton was John Ligonier who operated an ferry service from Detroit to Mobile Bay in 1795-96. In 1806, James Kenedy bought land in present day Canton from Hugh Lawson for $1 million dollars and began developing it into a town with a courthouse and jail. By 1810, there were over 100 white people living in Canton. In 1903, Henry Ford moved his auto factory from Highland Park, Michigan to nearby Hamtramck Township and founded Ford Motor Company here on land that he had purchased from Andrew Carnegie for $3 million dollars two years earlier. Ford's original plant produced only cars; however, due to continued growth within the township and new technology advances such as mass production methods used today at car plants all over North America., Ford's company soon became one of North America's largest automakers with operations throughout many states across both Canada and Mexico including our southern neighbors Louisiana and Texas where we built some very large plants including Plant line #2 which manufactured Trucks for GM at their Mexico City plant until they closed down in 2006!

Canton, Mississippi is a town in the Jasper County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the right bank of the Yazoo River and is bordered to the north by Meridian and to the east by Starkville. The first white person to settle in what is now Canton was John Baptiste Clark in 1827. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the river and named it Clarksville. By 1830, there were about 20 people living in Canton. In 1832, two men from Illinois, Isaac Henshaw and Alfred Dickenson (brother of John Dickinson), settled in Canton and began trading with local merchants. They built a log courthouse which served as court house until 1840 when a new brick courthouse was constructed. In 1851, two more men from Illinois came to Canton: George Washington Watts and Solomon Davenport Perry Jr.. Watts became mayor of Canton while Perry became an insurance agent. In 1865 an act of Congress passed an act granting land along the Yazoo River for military purposes; this led to development of canton as an agricultural center with cotton plantations as its mainstay economy. In 1902-1903, during Reconstruction era in America, some black Mississippians who had been forced out of their homes due to violence or natural disasters registered with Federal authorities as citizens of newly formed Confederate States of America (CSA). As part of this process they were required to provide proof that they were not living under illegal control by Union forces at any time during the war. This document known as The Free Negro Registration Act provides important insight into African American life before and after Reconstruction in America In 1907-1908 another group of black Mississippians called The Knights Benevolent Association (KBA) organized efforts among local farmers to resist white supremacy through peaceful protests against racial segregation laws enacted by state legislatures throughout southern America during that period known collectively as "The Great Migration". This period saw huge waves of African Americans migrate westward across country looking for Opportunity As cotton prices continued declines following World War I throughout most parts of America many blacks decided it would be best not to pursue economic opportunities within society but instead head towards Canada where jobs were available for them without racism
