Canton, Mississippi is a small town located in the central part of the state of Mississippi. It was first settled by African Americans in 1847 and became a white city in 1871. The current military base called Canton Army Base was established here in 1898. The fortifications were built to protect this area from attack by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. British troops also garrisoned the fortification for a time during World War I. Today, Canton Army Base houses various military units and is home to the United States Air Force’s 3rd Wing at Wright-Patterson AFB.

The first school in Canton opened in 1856. A cotton gin was built in 1865 and became known as "the most important cotton gin west of Memphis." In 1870, Canton acquired land along the Canadian River that included what is now downtown Canton. The town's first library was built on this property in 1872 and remained open until 1978. A new courthouse was completed in 1902 and has been used for judicial proceedings since then. A two-story brick block building housing the municipal offices and jail was constructed next door to this courthouse in 1940; it remains standing today as one of Canton's most distinctive landmarks. In 1966, work began on developing what would become downtown Canton with its present configuration; this project continued through 1975 when it was replaced by a more modern structure which still serves as the centerpiece of downtown canton today.

In 1818, the people of the town of Canton, Mississippi voted to incorporate as a new city. The vote was in support of a local plan to build an academy to educate black Mississippians. The school would be known as the "Negro Male Academy." The town's first Mayor was James Henson, who served from 1818-1821. He was followed by John Capps in 1822-1824 and John Pritchard in 1825-1827. The first white teacher at the Negro Male Academy was Mr. Thomas De Witt who taught from 1830-1831. In 1835, Rev. Samuel Morse came to Canton and began teaching classes at the academy which quickly became popular with students and locals alike due to his excellent instruction and friendly personality. In 1840, Miss Catharine Cook moved into Canton from Mobile and started teaching at the academy which soon became well known for its high quality education opportunities for black Mississippians. In 1861, Mrs. Anna Jourdan moved into Canton from Jackson and started teaching there also which helped continue to grow enrollment at the school until it reached its present size of over 900 students today! Prior to this time, many African Americans had been forced into labor on plantations or worked as guides or slaves in their communities throughout Mississippi Valley region where they were often treated poorly and suffered extreme poverty including poor health conditions., However, through education opportunities available here in Canton such as the Negro Male Academy, these individuals were able to achieve successful lives despite these challenges
Canton was founded in 1821 by General James K. Polk, who named it for the town of Canton, Ohio. The first few stores and homes were built on the east side of the Mississippi River and soon people were moving to the area because of its fertile soil and available water resources. By 1839, a community had grown up around what is now downtown Canton. In 1841, a post office was established in Canton and the first school was built in 1845. The town grew rapidly and by 1865, it had a population of over 1,500 people. During World War II, Canton was an important military base because it housed many tanks and other vehicles used in the war effort. After the war ended, Canton slowly declined as businesses closed down or moved out of state. However, Decay & Renewal Inc., which owns much of downtown Canton today began efforts to revitalize the city in 2006 with grants from both local government agencies and private donations. Today there are more than 100 businesses located throughout downtown Canton which helps keep the economy active and growing
