The gift was a machinegun and grenade launcher, which were both donated to the air force in 1944. In 1946, Colonel Freeman also donated an airplane to the air force. This airplane was used as a training aircraft and was first flown by General Curtis LeMay in 1949. In 1951, General Arnold ordered all military branches to begin giving gifts to their commanders at Christmas time. Canton is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi and the county seat of Lowndes County. The population was 26,546 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Lowndes County. It is also the largest city in Delta County, Alabama. The first permanent settler in what would become Canton was Hugh Cunningham on July 1, 1814 when he and his family arrived from Tennessee with four oxen and two horses. The town began as a trading post on the Yazoo River between Meridian and Vicksburg. In 1836, Cunningham built a log cabin which served as courthouse until 1840 when a more permanent structure was erected. In 1847,Lowndes County was created from parts of Jackson, Lauderdale and Choctaw Counties In 1865-1866, cotton plantations were moved to central Mississippi from Delta County by Union troops during Civil War efforts to control Confederate cotton production. By 1868-1869, lowland cotton had been replaced by upland cotton land in Canton due to increased prices for lower quality produce caused by Union blockade restrictions on shipping goods out of Wilmington harbor Consequently this led to an increase population growth rate for Canton from 2% per year during 1865-1870 to 10% per year by 1880; this rapid growth rate continued into the early 20th century In 1870–71 due to floods that destroyed many homes and businesses along the Yazoo River corridorwidening delta Liuhae Creek located near present day Canton resulted in large influx of refugees who included lumberjacks displaced by flooding along interstate 55 (the “Great Bend”) which connected Vicksburg with Mobile Bayou mouths bringing people through what is now known as downtown Canton Canton experienced its first fire since 1800 when an auctioneer’s shop caught on fire adjacent Broad Street on November 3rd causing $2 worth of merchandise lost In 1902–1903 Hurricane Andrew devastated much of inland Mississippi killing over 100 people including some 60 members of the Cunningham family who lost their home in broad daylight outside their barn just east of town center . A new courthouse replacing an old one burned down later that year but fortunately no injuries or damage occurred within or nearby town center At about this time African American churches werebeginningto be established throughout northeast Mississippi due to growing abolitionist sentiment resulting from political/ social unrest brought about byACTION OF PRESIDENT JAMES KNOX ON FEBRUARY 14TH 1881 BLACK PEOPLE WERE TO BE ALLOWED TO OWN THEIR OWN LAND IN AMERICA WITHOUT WHITE OWNER'S PERMISSION OR BENEFIT WITHIN THE FAMILY OWNERSHIP SYSTEM AND THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY THE LEGISLATURE AT AN AMENDMENT TO THE MISSISSIPPI CODE ON APRIL 27TH 1881 WITH OVER HALF OF THE CANTON COUNTY FREE BLACK EMIGRANTS AGREEING TO THESE CONDITIONS BEFORE THAT TIME

Canton is a city in Randolph County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 12,740 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Randolph County and part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1811 by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the Yazoo River for traders and travelers between Natchez and Mobile. In 1837, Canton became an independent town when it seceded from Randolph County. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Pemberton's army passed through Canton while moving south to Sherman's Atlanta Union Army camp; most of the men in Canton immediately joined Pemberton's forces. After the war ended, Canton returned to its original status as a town until it was annexed by Jackson in 1978. Canton is located at (32.765328,-85.565921). According to the 2010 census, its total area is 99 square miles (248 km2). It has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers; average monthly temperatures range from 26 °F (−3 °C) in January to 85 °F (29 °C) in July.[1] The canton Civic Center houses several businesses including: banks First National Bank of Hattiesburg & Trust Company The old cotton gin which still stands today on Main Street was built in 1810 by Captain John Cooksey for his father-in-law Colonel Samuel Hood Cooksey who had purchased land near what is now Canton from General Wilkinson for $4200 per acre ($140 per hectare).[2] The first crop grown here was corn which brought excellent profits for Cooksey and he continued this profitable practice until about 1830 when prices began declining along with demand from Europe due to market speculation.[3] By 1840 however profits were high enough that he decided to discontinue corn production altogether and replaced it with cotton production which continues today as one of the primary sources of economic growth for Canton.[4][5]Captain Cooksey also built a gristmill on exactly where Main Street now meets US Hwy 59 just east of town limits although this mill never got operational because Revolutionary War hero Major George Rogers Clark donated land adjacent to it on which Clarksville should have been built instead so that local farmers could get their hands on someugar cane before being shipped off to Louisiana where sugar cane processing took place.[6][7][8][9][10]This event helped solidify Randolph County’s relationship with Clarksville going back over two centuries[11]and provided much needed financial stability throughout those years when other aspects such as farming failed or went into decline due largely to changes within global markets[12].Today both buildings are used as office space by various businesses inside or outside of town limits with both still standing rooflines completely unscathed since they were rebuilt following Katrina/ Rita last year.]
Canton was founded by the Choctaw people in 1821. The town grew rapidly due to its location near a major cotton plantation and its natural resources. By 1840, the town had over 1,000 residents. In 1852, the Union Army destroyed Choctaw Town during their attack on Vicksburg. The town never recovered and eventually went out of business.
