The United States Navy has a long and proud history in Brookhaven, Mississippi. The town was founded by Commodore John C. Fisk in 1814 as the first permanent U.S. military installation on the Gulf Coast. The navy played an important role in America’s development as a major power during the 19th century and into the 20th century. In addition to its military importance, Brookhaven also became known for its production of munitions, shipbuilding and other manufacturing products from local resources. Navy gifts have been a part of Naval tradition since at least the late 1800s. One of the earliest examples is Commodore John C. Fisk’s gift of a large quantity of cannons to be used against Spanish forces during the Mexican-American War (1846). A variety of naval items were gifted throughout this time period, including torpedoes, submarines and USS Constitution class ships (the first nuclear powered warship). During World War II, Brookhaven played an even more important role as one of two naval installations in Mississippi chosen to produce warships for deployment along America’s East Coast. This work was done under contract with Japanned companies and resulted in many USS Enterprise class ships being built hereabouts. As America entered World War III, Admiral Chester Nimitz called on Brookhaven to provide him with new weapons systems such as Aircraft carriers and guided missiles that would give American troops their first real opportunity against Axis forces on land battlefields around the world! Sadly, these days few sailors or Marines can walk through those gates today without feeling some sense of nostalgia for this once thriving community located just outside Jackson County limits; home to over 60% maritime employment!

Polk in his famous campaign against Mexico. Brookhaven is a town in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,039 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Brookhaven was Jedediah Berry who arrived in 1822. He named his new place after his brother John Berry of Lexington, Kentucky. In 1829, Joseph Covington established a cotton gin on the banks of the Tecumseh River near present-day Brookhaven. By 1830, Brookhaven had a school and two churches. In 1831, John Sellers purchased land east of Brookhaven from Jabez Bacon for $2 per acre ($40 total). Sellers built a mill on the creek that flows through town and introduced cotton to Mississippi. In 1840, Amos Kendall bought lot #1 north of present-day Brookhaven from Solomon Kane for $10 per acre ($160 total). Kendall founded Kendall's Mills which manufactured flour, saddles and other farm products until 1870 when it moved to nearby Tellico City and continued manufacturing there until 1907. In 1847–48 Jens Christensen began construction of what is now called "The Old Mill", located near what is now downtown Brookhaven on Lots 10 & 11 (now part of Lot 13). The mill produced flour and cornmeal for local consumption until 1898 when it became an agricultural implement dealership known as Jens Christensen & Sons Incorporated.. When World War I broke out in 1914, many farmers brought their equipment into town to be repaired or replaced by local mechanics during the war period; this caused many businesses in town to close along with textile production which ultimately led to its decline beginning in the 1920s due mostly to lack of demand for goods made in rural areas during wartime years although some mills did reopen after 1919 following ratification of The National Interstate Cotton Agreement which increased prices paid by importers for domestic cotton

Brookhaven is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,941 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brookhaven was founded in 1868 by pioneer settlers from Tennessee and Georgia as a landing on the Yazoo River for cotton traders. The town name comes from "Brook" meaning "a place to cross" and "hei" meaning "hill." In 1872, an area near present-day Brookhaven was annexed by the town of Independence; this made Brookhaven an independent municipality. The first post office in Brookhaven was established in 1870. By 1905, there were 12 post offices in the community with a population of over 100 residents. The first electric street light was installed in 1907 and became operational that year. By 1918,brookhaven had two banks: First National Bank and Merchant's Trust Company (now part of HSBC). There were also several churches including First Baptist Church which served as the local meeting house until it burned down in 1904; Methodist church which closed when its membership dwindled after World War I; Second Baptist Church which moved to Union City after being displaced by a fire at their original location on FM 1536; and Third Presbyterian Church which met at various locations before settling at their current site on US Hwy 199 south of downtown in 1922. In 1925, Brooks Independent School District No 4 was created within Brooks Consolidated School District No 2 through annexation of portions of Blossom Township (later merged into Hinds County). At that time there were only three schools serving students pre-kindergarten through high school: Brooks Consolidated School District No 2; Independence High School; and East Central Junior College/Secondary School—or “Central” as it then called itself since it shared physical facilities with Central High School but offered classes across four grades instead of just one grade per school year like other districts did then. In 1927-28, following approval from state officials due to rising costs associated with expanding education services into new areas such as rural Mississippian towns outside Jackson proper such as Brookhaven & Madisonville*, central senior high school relocated eastward along IH 10 from where it sat on FM 3596 between Clarksdale Road & Harrison Road to what is now Garden View Drive adjacent to IH 10 Business Loop* (the old location is still visible today looking out onto Will Rogers Parkway) across from fields belonging to Hutchins Farms Resource Center west of IH10 concurrent with expansion plans for Hutchins Farms * See map below *All numbers are approximate unless otherwise noted
Brookhaven was founded in 1836 and named for Commodore John Brooks, who had helped fund the town's development. Brookhaven developed into a small agricultural community with a few stores and homes. In the early 1900s, Brookhaven began to grow as a manufacturing center for Mississippi's cotton industry. The town started to become known for its Hattie Mae doll company, which produced more than 1 million dolls before folding in the 1970s.
