The USS Constitution (1797) was the first ship of the United States Navy and was deployed in waters off of Mississippi during the War of 1812. The USS Constitution was a wooden warship that was launched on December 12, 1797 by Commodore James K. Polk from Boston, Massachusetts. The ship sailed to Pensacola, Florida on January 9, 1800 and arrived there on January 13. She remained at Pensacola until February 8 when she left for Gibraltar with supplies for Americans fighting in Spain. On March 3rd, 1800 the Constitution reached Havana, Cuba where she disembarked her passengers and crew before sailing back to Pensacola on April 6th. On May 7th Sailing again under Commodore James Knox Polk her destination being Mobile Bay where she arrived June 15th after a stop at Charleston Harbor and load of cotton goods.
Brookhaven is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,550 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Starkville–Mauldin Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brookhaven was founded in 1853 by John Brook and his wife Sarah Hutton Brook. It was named for the nearby small village of Brookhaven on the Alabama River. In 1865, it became an incorporated town after being chosen from a competition run by theMississippi Valley Railroad Company to be one of its stations on its new line from Memphis to Jackson. In 1898, Brooks family donated land for a public school and library in what would become Brookhaven; this donation was followed by gifts from other families over time. The first building on the current campus was built in 1907-08. In 1916, the community erected its own courthouse and jail when state law required towns to do so within their borders. Brookhaven experienced difficult times during World War II; however, it recovered quickly and had strong economic growth following the war. In 1957, it became an official college town with Mississippi State University becoming its primary provider of education and employment opportunities for locals/students alike; though various businesses continue to operate locally today (e.g., JCPenney & Sam's Club). The decline of local manufacturing jobs throughout most of Northeast Mississippi starting in 2000 led to significant declines in home ownership prices throughout much of central Mississippi between 2002-2009 due largely to softwood lumber production shifting from eastern Tennessee into states such as Missouri & Arkansas where duty rates were lower than those paid by our friends down south (iirc). As such many people who once resided or worked near downtown started moving out towards rural areas which again caused prices go up significantly along with less access to quality schools and services having been lost along with all that came with' suburbanization'.
