Brookhaven is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jackson, Mississippi. The population was 2,719 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Brookhaven has two schools and one community center. The first permanent settler in what is now Brookhaven was Gideon Kinney, who arrived with his family in 1814 from Massachusetts. He named his farm "Welcome" after his home country of England. By 1820, there were 10 residents living on theKinney farmstead including four children born to Gideon and his wife Hannah (née Richardson). In 1821, Gideon's son John Fenton came overland from Kentucky to purchase land from kinney for $800 cash. At this time, the area around present-day Brookhaven consisted of low lying swampy ground that drained into a small river called the Chickasaw Hills River. In 1827, General William Troup established Fort Moultrie on an island located near today's intersection of U.S., State and Shreveport Streets to protect shipping entrance points on the Red River near its mouth at Falcon Lake which then lay within contemporary Brookhaven limits Brookhaven grew rapidly due to slave trade activity as well as farming by early settlers; however most blacks lived along Black Belt Road leading south out of town east through present day Meridianville off US 71 until they could be freed in 1865 when it became known as Dixie Highway . Slavery ended with passage of the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865 which abolished slavery throughout America . In 1886 Jno Ladd purchased 8 acres north of town from Chief Sojourner Truth for $200 which he donated to charity Apostolic Episcopal Church was built there in 1888 and dedicated by Bishop Harry Emerson Smith Jr.. New Hope Chapel (also known as Our Lady’s Chapel), erected in 1913 also stands today across Ulysses S Grant Parkway east/west from City HallGideon Kinney Cemetery opened October 6th 1863 consisting mostly African American burials although white families also interred there during later years including Rev Dr Jesse Hilliard who served as pastor for many years before fleeing racial violence in Memphis Accordingly Brooks County began annexing adjacent territory heretofore unincorporated except for a tiny hamlet on Fort Moultrie Island where three buildings remain today - one used as a grocery store circa 1915 and two residences dating back to about 1850 - prior annexation occurred primarily because it was easiest site acquisition since no other parcel appeared available

The town was named for John Brook, a wealthy New Englander who had donated land to make the observatory. The first permanent building in Brookhaven was a log cabin built by Captain Isaac Hull in 1824. The Naval Observatory moved to its present location on Gadsden Street at Stroudsburg Boulevard in 1895. By 1900, Brookhaven had a population of 2,500 people and was home to a large commercial center. However, during World War IBrookhaven's economy suffered as production shifted from agriculture to munitions production.
