Brookhaven is a small town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tupelo, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brookhaven was founded in 1849 and incorporation occurred in 1882. Brookhaven first known as "Natchez" was named for General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law and his mother's brother, Natchez Bonham (1766–1837), who fought with British forces during the American Revolution. The name may have been derived from a Shawnee word meaning "a place where no one lives." In 1819, local traders Mercurius Moore and Isaac Watts donated land to build a community on the site of present day Brookhaven. The town plat reflected that it would be an agricultural center with cotton plantations supplying goods to Mobile and Pensacola markets. The town prospered due to its location and access to transportation by both railroads and boats; eastbound passengers could disembark at either Gulfport or New Orleans before continuing their journey westward on the Alabama Rivercar line. However, when Interstate 20 crossed over Clearwater River in 1965, much of what had once been rural farmland became suburban neighborhoods; this has led to increased competition for agricultural land within walking distance of downtown Brookhaven. In addition, many businesses closed after Katrina made landfall on August 29th 2006; many residents were unable or unwilling to return until more permanent housing had been constructed or they took temporary measures such as setting up huts along the riverbanks until permanent homes could be erected. As of October 2007, only two buildings remain standing from when the community consisted of 34 buildings including six churches and 12 schools which housed almost 4500 students grades K-12th grade). Even though most businesses are long gone, some remains like participation trophies left behind at old school desks still adorned with photos from years ago which can be seen through glass displays cases throughout downtown today

Brookhaven was founded in 1819 as a small town on the Yazoo River. It became an important railroad junction and manufacturing center during the 19th century. The town was abandoned after the Civil War, but it was revived in the 1920s as a ghost town. Brookhaven was named for Commodore John C. Brook of the Mississippi Central Railroad. In 1925, a new community, Bayou La Batre, was founded in Brookhaven. Bayou La Batre is now a protected area serving as a wildlife refuge and breeding ground for butterflies and other insects.
Brookhaven was founded on the banks of the Big Black River in 1818 by General James Wilkinson. The town was named for Colonel George Brockman, a British officer who served in the American War of Independence. The first permanent settler in Brookhaven was John and Nancy Noble, who arrived in 1821. By 1830, Brookhaven had a population of around 100 people. In 1834, Brookhaven became an official town with its own government and courts. In 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved his army from New Orleans to Mobile County, Alabama, and began planning his invasion of Mississippi. On April 12, 1863, Confederate General Braxton Bragg issued Order No. 4 which called for all white Mississippians to rise up against their black neighbors. Many Mississippians refused to fight against their white friends and families and went into hiding or neutrality during the war effort. On July 16th 1865, Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered all white Mississippians to stand together against what he termed “the negro insurrection” inside Mississippi itself (this event is known as the Battle of Vicksburg). Approximately 30% of the state's population participated in this Rebellion: men over age 25%, women over age 15%, children under age 6 months old (of course these numbers would've been much higher if not for slavery), and slaves themselves – many turned on their masters and joined forces with the rebels instead. events such as this led directly to Reconstruction – a time when African Americans were given legal rights and various programs were put into place to improve their lives such as education and employment opportunities.
