Brookhaven is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1892 by John and Anna Brooks. Brookhaven is named for two of its founders: John Brooks who discovered oil and Anna Brooks who developed the first cotton gin in Jackson County. Brookhaven is located on the banks of the Asbury River, about south of Jackson and east of Meridian. It lies on an alluvial plain that has been cut by numerous rivers over time including the Asbury, Big Black and Pascagoula Rivers. The town consists of a single block long with a wide open business district around its central square which has several buildings dating back to before it became part of Hancock County. nearsby towns include White Hall and Enterprise to the east, Marshall to the north, Meridian to the northwest, Tupelo to the west and Brookhaven proper to the south. The town formally incorporated as a village on November 3rd 1892 under date of December 12th but continued functioning as an unincorporated community until January 1st 1898 when it became part of newly created Hancock County following statehood within Mississippi In 1899 another new post office called Carthage was opened in what is now Brookhaven proper but no evidence exists that this ever served as a branch or terminal for mail from other parts of Mississippian . On July 24th 1907 an act congress passed entitled "An Act To Provide For The Government And Management Of The Portions Of Mississippi West Of The Gulf" authorized US Customs officials stationed at Biloxi (then known as Mobile) to begin operations at what are now known as "Brookhaven Harbor" off present day mile marker 158 on State Highway 61 just outside present day Brookhaven limits
Brookhaven is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Brookhaven was Jameson Hicks in 1821. He and his family built a cabin on Current Creek near present-day Brookhaven High School. Hicks also operated a sawmill and gristmill in Brookhaven for many years. In 1836, David Dickson purchased land east of present day Brookhaven from Hicks and began development of what would become the city ofbrookhaven. In 1857, Darius Nance bought 320 acres (12 km²) southeast of Brookhaven from Jeptha Gentry for $2,000. Nance developed this land into the townsite of Nanceburg which had a post office established in 1859. In 1865, Atherton Caldwell bought 320 acres (12 km²) northeast of Nanceburg fromNance for $1,500 and began developing it into what would become known as Caldwell Heights which had its own post office established in 1870. In 1903, John McMullen acquired 640 acres (24 km²) south of Holly Springs from Wacoal Powell for $10 million dollars to create Forrest City which became one of Jackson's largest neighborhoods after World War II when industry moved out to Forrest City by way of the I-565 bypass highway that Ulysses S Grant Highway freeway now forms
