Brandon, Mississippi is a small town in the Gulf of Mexico about 45 minutes from Gulfport and 30 minutes from Jackson. The population was 1,500 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Misshares River and has a government-sponsored school system with grades PreK-12. The community began as a post office in 1879. The town was formed when the US mail carrier, James Waddell, decided to move his family to what would become Brandon in order to take advantage of better farmland nearby. In 1902, a mill was built in the community and became one of the first mills in Mississippi. When Mexican Independence came about in1821, many Texans decided to migrate northward instead of staying put and some people moved back south while others founded new towns such as Tupelo (established 1827) or Corinth (founded 1830). However, most residents of Brandon stayed put because they had no choice given that they received free land from Congress following the Compromise Of 1850 which gave settlers around the country a chance to purchase 640 acres (circa $2 per acre) for every IndianHEADED family who lived there before 1790 AD - making them farmers rather than hunter/gatherers like their predecessors! By 1860, only about 25% of original white inhabitants remained within what is now Brandon; however black Mississippians made up over 90% of all African Americans living inMississippi during this time period! This community also experienced significant economic transformation during this time as railroad construction began bypassing nearby towns such as Meridian for transportation links with Tulsa, Oklahoma; Jackson County quickly became known as "the breadbasket"of Mississippi due to its large cotton crop production capacity[1].
