Worthington, Minnesota is a small town located in the Dakota Valley region of the Great Lakes region. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1868 by Swedish immigrants who had settled in what is now Dodge City, Kansas. They named their new town after Worthington County, England where they had been living for some time as farmers and traders before moving toMinnesota in 1854. The first post office opened in 1870 and the first school was built in 1872. The community became a village on May 1, 1888 when it merged with neighboring townships of Beatrice and Hastings to form Worthington Township. The township name was changed to Worthington on December 15, 1907 following a referendum conducted by citizens seeking to change its name due to objections from other nearby communities which retained their original namesakes (Beatrice and Hastings). The community experienced rapid growth due to its location near Lake Superior and its heavy industry during World War II including munitions production at Hamline Arsenal which resulted in the creation of many jobs within the community itself as well as throughout southwestern Minnesota area which accounted for much of the wartime economic boom that took place in those years across Great Lakes Region. Worthington is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the shore of Lake Superior. The population was 2,029 at the 2000 census.
