Woodbury is a small town in western Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1881 by Swedish immigrants and named after Gustavus Wirth, a local landowner and politician who had donated land to be developed as a town. The first post office opened in 1882, and the first store opened in 1883. In 1903, Woodbury became an incorporated village. In 1938, most of Woodbury Township east of Center Road was annexed into Minneapolis while much of the rest of the township remained unincorporated and continues to be called "Woodbury". In 1951, most ofwoodbury's remaining residents voted to become members of the new city of Minneapolis when it was created from parts of two other towns – Hennepin County and Stroudsburg Township – following the American Civil War. As Minneapolis grew larger, woodbury's residents began to feel outnumbered and desired their own municipality with its own schools, library, fire district and more limited services that were available within city limits. In 1960 they again voted to secede from Minneapolis due to this lack of representation within city government; this time they formed their own municipality which still exists today as Woodbury Township (and does not include downtown). The first settlers to what is now Woodbury arrived in 1857 and named it after their home in Essex County, Massachusetts. After the war, wood products became an important source of income for the community and there were two hospitals established in Woodbury to care for war veterans and civilians injured during the conflict. In 1949, Woodbury organized as a village and has since grown into a vibrant community with its own economy and social services. The current name of the town was chosen by vote of residents in 2002 and refers to its history as a center for agricultural production and commerce within the surrounding rural communities.
