In 1893, the town of Woodbury was founded in southwestern Minnesota. The name comes from a Shawnee word meaning "happy." In 1907, the town changed its name to Minneapolis and became one of the leading cities in America. Over time, Woodbury experienced dramatic changes. Its population rapidly grew as mining and agricultural businesses moved into the town. By 1925, it had reached 1,500 residents and was considered an important junction for highway routes east and west through Minnesota. The postwar years were difficult for Woodbury as manufacturing jobs declined and its boundaries shrunk. However, by 1970, the town had recovered enough to establish itself as a major center for rural development in southern Minnesota. Today, Woodbury is home to over 10 thousand residents and continues to experience significant growth both economically and culturally.
The first settler in what is now Woodbury was John Miller in 1829. He and his family moved from the town of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin to a farm on the west side of the Minnesota River. The area that is now Woodbury was first inhabited by two groups of Dakota Sioux. One group lived near an underground cave, and the other group lived on high ground about three miles away from where they were living when John Miller arrived. John Miller's son, David, built a cabin on the west side of the river in 1830. In 1831, David's brother-in-law Jesse Lapp came to live with them and help manage their farm. The Lapp brothers were instrumental in helping to develop this area into what it is today. In 1836, Andrew Jackson was elected president of America and he announced plans for a new land grant program which would give settlers access to land in what are nowMinnesota and Iowa. Within a few months of his inauguration, Jackson had issued his proclamation making Woodbury one of these grants. This allowed farmers who owned land north of Mason City to apply for it and received permission to build homes there as well as claim other parcels of land east of Mason City as well. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln became president and he issued an executive order which revoked all previous executive orders related to the Grant program. This meant that everyone who had applied for or received any part of the Grant program since its inception would have their applications denied even if they had proper documentation available! As a result, many people who had hoped to gain access to this land lost everything they had worked for over years!
