Woodbury is a town in White County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 709 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1855 by Norwegian immigrants. The name "Woodbury" comes from an early settler's choice of a location near the present-day village of Woodbury Heights and the wooded hills that surrounded it. The first post office in Woodbury opened on December 12, 1857. In 1870, the first telephone line was installed in Woodbury and service continued until 1978. In 1889, a sawmill was built in Woodbury and remained in operation until 1984. The mill closed because of competition from newer mills in nearby Duluth. In 1950, the Carnegie Library opened and remains one of the town's most prominent landmarks today. Many manufacturing businesses have left or been converted to other uses over time; however, one business that has kept its place for many years is Johnson’s Department Store which still operates as a general store with several exceptions having been closed down since 1985 such as their warehouse (now occupied by IGA) which once housed John Deere equipment; their gas station which once served as an ice cream parlor; and a small grocery store operated out of an old tire factory located off US Highway 61 South just east of town limits now known as 'The Brickyard' restaurant/gas station after being bought by current owner Bob 'The Brickyard' Hesselink who renovated it into what became his restaurant back then before moving it to his current location next door serving pizza etc...many others including some we may not mention have had similar changes over time but these are just a few examples to give you an idea of how busy things used to be within this small community!
The town of Woodbury was founded in 1858 by a group of settlers who came from the town of Gratz, PA. The original settler's had come to the area for mining and timber opportunities. In 1871, the first post office was established in Woodbury. The town grew rapidly and by 1880, it had a population of around 350 people. within 10 years, the population had doubled to 1,600 people and by 1912, it had reached 3,500 people. The depression hit Woodbury hard in the 1930s and 1940s and the population decreased until it stabilized at around 2,000 people during World War II. After the war, Woodbury experienced rapid growth with its population reaching 4,000 residents by 1970. The towns current size is just over 5 thousand residents as of 2018.
