Winona, Minnesota is a small town located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, Winona has a total area of 0.8 km² (0.3 sq mi). The first settler in what is now Winona was A.J. Smith in 1881 and his family moved from Illinois to Winona in 1883. For many years, it was the only town in this region and as such had an important impact on local life and culture. The community became an agricultural center due to its location near water resources and its connections to railroads which allowed for increased production of crops and products other than lumber. In 1929,Winona became one of two communities in Michigan that were merged into the newly created city of Detroit after it was determined that their respective populations did not meet the necessary requirements for separate incorporation or cityhood

Winona is a city in Minnesota. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County. Winona was founded in 1854 by her husband, David Durance and his father-in-law, George Armstrong Crouse. The city’s first store opened in 1855. Over time, Winona developed into a major transportation and commercial center for the area with its railroad station being one of the busiest on the continent. In 1916, Winona became incorporated as a village which later merged into Hennepin County. Today, Winona retains its rural feel with many of its residents still living primarily off their land or working within the agricultural sector. The history of Winona is intertwined with that of David Durance who was born in 1824 in what is now Russia and immigrated to America in 1851 after serving as an artillery officer during the Crimean War. After marrying Anna Sorenson in 1862, Durance began acquiring properties around town which would eventually come to form today’s blockaded street grid layout – including what are now three blocks north of Main Street (now Third Street) where he built his home called “The Gables” still standing to this day. By 1865, David had also founded what would become known as Western MinnPost newspapers and served as publisher until his death two years later at age 74%. In 1934 when Hennepin County was created from parts of Minneapolis Township it lay within Northwestern MinnPost territory before becoming its own municipality in 1945; however it reverted back to township status upon incorporation into Hennepin County proper following a referendum by citizens. Today Winona remains largely rural with most residents still using subsistence farming methods while economy relies heavily on services provided by local businesses such as medical clinics and schools located near downtown Winona
Winona was founded in 1854 by the Minnesota Territorial Legislature as Winona Township. The township was organized on November 1, 1868, when it split from Mankato Township. On February 14, 1970, the township changed its name to Winona and became a city.
